Heineken Cambodia Builds Cambodia's 1st Large Biomass Power Plant

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On 8 December 2021, Heineken Cambodia and BECIS held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Cambodia's first large biomass power plant to generate thermal energy at its brewery in Phnom Penh.

His Excellency Sao Sopheap, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony, which was held in front of the Heineken Brewery along Tiger Beer Street, Boangkanh Village, Prek Ek, Chbar Ampov, Phnom Penh. The groundbreaking ceremony for the biomass power plant was also attended by representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, local authorities, business associations, as well as business partners and the media.

The $ 5.8 million BECIS plant is scheduled to take seven months to complete and will mainly run on fuel from rice husks from Prey Veng province. The plant will generate steam to supply thermal energy for exclusive use at the brewery. The power project is expected to create jobs for 50 people and is expected to benefit rice entrepreneurs such as millers and farmers by helping to add value to their products.

By switching to biomass, Heineken Cambodia expects to save 17,000 tons of carbon per year. The biomass power plant will enable Heineken Brewery to use 100% renewable biomass energy and thereby reduce the company's carbon emissions by 60%. The project will also complement Cambodia's goal of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Heineken Cambodia Biomass Power Plant is expected to be operational by July 2022.
Heineken Cambodia was recently recognized as a major contributor to environmental protection through the prestigious Cambodia Eurocham CSR Awards 2021. The company is also recognized by the Prime Minister of Cambodia as the largest taxpayer in the beer industry.

Cambodian biomass power plant on track to go online by July

A major rice husk biomass power plant in south-eastern Phnom Penh’s Chbar Ampov district is still on track to be completed and start operations by July.

Designed to contribute to the Kingdom’s emission reduction efforts, the plant broke ground on December 8, 2021, in collaboration with Singapore-based Berkeley Energy Commercial and Industrial Solutions (BECIS), with capital investment of $5.8 million.

Located in Prek Eng commune’s Roboh Angkanh village, the facility will reportedly use waste paddy husk sourced from nearby Prey Veng province to the east, and initially supply energy to the Heineken Cambodia brewery.

The plant aims for “100 percent renewable thermal energy, 60 percent reduction on CO2 emissions in production, therefore, saving 17,000 tonnes of CO2 per year”, the joint press release issued by BECIS and the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) said without providing a concrete timeframe.
