Will anyone be surprised if he is just jawboning the company to manipulate the price and make a killing without actually completing the buy?

Politically, socially, and intellectually, Mr. Musk is an ill-educated sophomore -- someone who too eagerly picks up on current fashions for pigeonholing others by parroting argot, slang and lingo; ie.: this misuse of the term "woke" in the incorrect pejorative sense is typical of white racists / Republicans in America; and in this, Musk is merely showing off an empty-headed monkey-brain reflex -- and not any slight semblance of original thought.

Elon Musk is deluded by the illusory blessing of his own personal good fortune as a business genius... Success in commercial and engineering endeavor doesn't necessarily convey social wisdom. The "natural" psyche of such a wealthy tycoon usually represents the typical neo-liberal economic rapist who does not want his minions to create labor unions. How can mere workers have any power to defend their rights against the unregulated and oppressive control that private ownership of enterprises inevitably imposes?

"Woke" is a positive term that was used by black Americans to convey their need to become socially vigilant and active against the oppression of their white racist overlords. Any other use of the term is completely wrong and represents a distortion of its original etymological root...
OK, now try to edit this piece and remove all the name calling, hysteria and hyperbole:

socially (do you know him socially?) ....(not yet)....
ill-educated sophomore; ....a typical nouveau-riche sophisticate....
white racists / Republicans in America; ....whites / Republicans....
empty-headed monkey-brain reflex (hmm, pots and kettles); ....a fashionable, illiberal in-crowd opinion....
typical neo-liberal economic rapist; ....typical know-it-all complacent industrialist...
minions; ....wage-slaves....
unregulated and oppressive control (unregulated? Seriously?); ...ostensibly regulated....
the oppression of their white racist overlords ...have you ever been to the deep south of the U.S.A.?

Better, but still a bit name calling.

Instead of "wage slaves", how about "employees on an average of $99,000 a year, which is more than if they were unionised"?
It's not at catchy as "wage slaves", which is a left wing "in-crowd" phrase (and highly offensive to average wage earners, especially black ones) but it is much more factual.

I can't see how he is going to make much unless he buys the company and floats it again or sells it to another tech giant a few years later at $100 a share. Even that is a puny return compared to his Tesla shares (and every other company he started).

He's got about 10% and who knows what they owe him per share but, unless he accumulated them between 2015 and 2018, they will owe him at least mid $30's. They could owe him much more than that.

They are now at $49 and he is trying to buy the lot for $54.20. If the deal falls through the price is likely to head south quickly especially if he tries to offload his 10% holding.

This whole move has unleashed a tsunami of adverse publicity, which is likely to continue, and he might be wondering if it is all going to be worth it.

He should stick to starting up companies, not paying through the nose for a sewer called Twitter.

The $99k average salary is very misleading, especially when the techs are earning $36k a year and the engineers are earning $180k a year.

Mehdi Hasan's response is worth posting as well. He also offered Musk to interview him on his show, that would be quite interesting.

He isn't buying it for business reasons. He is buying it to help Republicans not get censored when telling clear lies next election.
