CCF Says Imported Coconut Sweets Contain Harmful Chemical
Cambodia News (Kandal Province): According to consumer protection officers from the Kandal C.C.F., 39 boxes of a Vietnamese sweet coconut jelly marketed under the name of Thanh Binh were found to contain an illegal health-threatening chemical [which is not named] on April 22, 2022.
The officials inspected several establishments that distributed and repackaged the imported Vietnamese sweets. One of the establishments has been banned from repackaging the imported sweets from Vietnam since 2016, but was found to be in business again, doing the same production breaking the law. The authorities have fined this establishment and are in the process of bringing them to justice.
The authorities advise the public not to purchase and consume the banned products.

It would be nice if the competent authorities took a picture of the repackaged sweets and released it so that people could spot the tainted products, but I guess that's too much to ask forCEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sat Apr 23, 2022 5:39 pm One of the establishments has been banned from repackaging the imported sweets from Vietnam since 2016, but was found to be in business again, doing the same production breaking the law. Whenever I read these stories, I always think about the stuff they didn't find and slipped through. Remember the one where they found shrimp/prawns from Vietnam injected with some substance to make them look plumper?

My thoughts exactly. Stay away from all that foreign muck and cook yourself.Clutch Cargo wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 7:26 am Whenever I read these stories, I always think about the stuff they didn't find and slipped through. Yes for sure. Having said that, Mrs Cargo buys all our meat and veg from Kandal market. How do we know for sure: 1. where it comes from 2. has been treated with chemicals in some way. She always asks the sellers where the product comes from and they say from province. But they would say that wouldn't they? Try saying it comes from Vietnam and see how you go selling...Doc67 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 12:04 pmMy thoughts exactly. Even cooking yourself still requires ingredients. The general consensus here in Vietnam is that most of the food is doctored.Doc67 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 12:04 pmMy thoughts exactly. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... -sold.htmlWorkers were filmed injected the tiger prawns with a substance known as carboxymethyl cellulose or CMC.
The substance, which is not considered harmful, dissolves in water and becomes a smooth liquid before being pumped into the prawns.
While carboxymethyl cellulose is often used in food as a thickener for icing, many have labelled the Vietnamese workers as 'shameless' and dishonest for trying to plump up the prawns.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Re: CCF Says Imported Coconut Sweets Contain Harmful Chemical
Does anyone recall the Spanish cooking oil scandal from the ‘80s? Normal oil mixed with something else less compatible.
The Pan Pacific hotel in Dhaka advised us once not to eat the delicious looking apples after a crew member complained. Turns out they were treated with formaldehyde to maintain that delicious fresh look, and weren’t intended for eating. (Possibly why your average cannibal doesn’t go grocery shopping at the funeral home, but I digress)
There was a wider scandal reported in the press when it was discovered that this was a practice that was carried over into the markets, to keep the produce fresh while in transit. Potentially all the apples were tainted.
And the oranges? But we don’t eat the skin of the orange.
Eating healthily doesn’t always pay dividends.

Exactly. I remember a piece of advice about buying meat in SEA was to avoid buying raw meat that had no flies on it. (Think about it.) But, not too many - and no eggs please.
Vegetables and fruit that looks too good to be true probably is. BTW, perfect-looking fruit is quite often sold to be used as offerings, not to be eaten.
Yeah, what we actuallly eat doesn't bear thinking about really. Have a beer.
