PM tells Cambodian diplomats to stand against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

PM tells Cambodian diplomats to stand against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Post by nemo »

Prime Minister HE this morning told Cambodian diplomats to adopt a stance against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in all international polls.

“That is our absolute stance,” he said. “I give a guideline that where ever [our diplomats] have to vote on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, they have to vote against the invasion and the use of force.”

“Voting in favour of it will create a bad habit in the world which sees the strong invade the weak. So if someone invades us one day in the future, who will help?”

Cambodia earlier this month backed a United Nations emergency resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine and asking Russia to withdraw from Ukraine.

Cambodia has a balanced, pragmatic foreign policy that attempts to play foreign powers against each other, and this is the Foreign Ministry's reminder to their allies that they still have other options, reminding everyone that Cambodia always has an ace in its pocket to prevent the sort of heavy attachment to one side or another that typically characterises poorer, "3rd world" nations: I compare HE's foreign policy stance to a beautiful girl at a disco who flirts with the patrons so they all buy her drinks while in reality committing to none, hence why Cambodia can freely trade with North Korea or Iran without little fear of US involvement or "regime change" ( since no country wants to take the first step of shutting themselves out of Cambodia permanently and ceding the relationship to another, stronger power.)

Cambodia can freely trade with North Korea
No it can't. All the DPRK businesses were shut down about four years ago.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Many NK businesses shutdown under UN pressure, not Cambodian, and in fact Cambodia still is filled with legally active, tax-paying North Korean businesses according to USAID-funded NK News, especially hotels and gambling dens catering to Chinese clientele; Cambodia simply rejected this report and subsequently ignored it, and the US took no action as it was never mentioned ever again, seeing as the US doesn't want to sanction Cambodia because of the consequences of doing so (On another note: the US salivates at the idea of sanctioning Cambodia over the election since Sam Rainsy i.e Khmer Guaido was banned from entering Cambodia let alone participating, but will take almost zero action except visa banning some nameless officials since, if they actually did, China and Russia would simply move in and take over, not to mention Japan and Australia's investments would suffer gravely as a result).
