Thai police cast net to seize cybercriminals hiding in Cambodia

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thai police cast net to seize cybercriminals hiding in Cambodia

Top officials from the Thai Police Cyber Taskforce (PCT) and the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry met top brass in Cambodia earlier this week to discuss the extradition of cybercriminals believed to be hiding in the neighbouring country.

“A married couple was arrested on February 3 in Sa Kaew province for allegedly coordinating the transfer of Thais to work at two call centre gangs in Cambodia. This operation is reportedly overseen by a Chinese gang leader,” PCT chief Pol General Damrongsak Kittipraphat said.

“The PCT is tracking down other accomplices and has called on the court to issue arrest warrants for 71 individuals involved with two cybercriminal gangs believed to be hiding in Cambodia.”

Damrongsak said Cambodian authorities will cooperate with PCT to inspect three locations in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville where the suspects are believed to be hiding. They will then be arrested and handed over to Thailand for legal action.

“During Covid lockdowns, there have been many reports of people living along the Thai-Cambodian border being tricked into joining call-centre gangs in Cambodia, which scam victims in Thailand via the internet or calls,” Damrongsak said. “The PCT will work with relevant agencies in Thailand and neighbouring countries to bring these criminals to justice.”

Twelve Illegal Chinese Casino Workers Picked Up in Thailand
12 nabbed near border
published : 21 Mar 2022 at 04:30
Twelve Chinese nationals were caught sneaking into the kingdom in Chiang Rai's Chiang Khong and Chiang Saen districts over the past few days, a source said yesterday.

The migrants told police they work in casinos in Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia and were travelling through Thailand after being rotated. They chose Thailand because the country has good infrastructure, making it more convenient to travel.

Two Chinese men, detained by security forces during a patrol in Chiang Saen on Saturday night, were identified as Sun Lei, 37, and Ji Wei, 34.

They were caught while walking along a trail in Chaing Khong district's Ban Don Mahawan after illegally crossing the border.

By Sunday morning, six more Chinese nationals were found walking along another trail in another village located near the Mekong River, the source said.

They were identified as Lai Zi, 28, Ni Shigeng, 29, Wu Zengming, 28, Xian Anpei, 26, Xiao Zhuzhuo, 24, and Yang Yong, 30.

On Friday, security forces caught four Chinese nationals travelling in a boat from Laos hired to drop them off in Chiang Saen district's Ban Sop Yam.

They were identified as Xiao Zhuzhuo, 24, Song He, 20, Chen Jun, 20, and Zhang Hao, 19.

All 12 have been charged with illegal entry and violating the communicable disease law.

This is very true of Thailand, the better infrastructure makes for more convenient travel, but these Chinese had decided to walk.
What a convenient place, Laos and its unmanned border areas, it makes travel easier for illegals into neighboring countries. I wonder how many just slip over the Mekong into Cambodia?
Always "hope" but never "expect".
