Vietnamese at Bokor, what must we do?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The consensus among the general population is that they are ok as long as foreigners here are entered and living legally, and that was like 4 years ago. The real people who got muddled in this mess is the Kampuchea Kroms. And they are still crossing the Bavet and near borders like mosquitoes back and forth.

Then why must you, and CPPs opposition generally, continue to rail against the Vietnamese in general as you just did? This alleged consensus is disingenuous as well for how can people live here legally with a government whose officials refuse to issue them documents at all,or documents which characterize families born in Cambodia as immigrants. It's a bullshit response: Most Khmers I know see Vietnamese regardless of their status as foreigners (as they are characterized under law) who really don't belong in Srok Khmer. I don't believe Khmer's have changed one bit in their outlook re the Vietnamese since the pogroms of 1970. What's changed is they better understand the cost of war, but Vietnamese are as much the other as ever. You're entitled to your opinion , after ten years of listening to anti Vietnamese rantings from all quarters that's mine.

Back to the OP , I've now read from two sources that the first French to explore Bokor in 1911-17 found Vietnamese hermit monks (and some nuns) living in caves on the mountain, and at least one Vietnamese pagoda. No mention of Khmer spiritual pilgrimage. Funny that. The never ending ironies of "true Khmer history".

I will make my stand clear here. I do not support the CNRP, I do however discouraging friends and others voting for the CPP. I hangout and live among the Vietnamese people in SR and Svay Rieng and we are friends. Regarding papers, the majority have it sorted...except for the sex trafficked women and Kumpuchea Kroms, and sadly children...I DO NOT condone it...they are considered minorities. My orphan brothers and sisters in law are native Siem Reapers can't even get family certificate and Khmer national ID, what makes the VN unique? The Khmer authorities are all about money all the way from the ladders up. And the general VN population knows who to obey.

I initial response to you since the first page is your pseudo support on the VN. The legalization of the VN here is already underway. Your observation for 10 or so years you failed to mention that Cambodians find it very acceptable living among their foreign neighbor. Learning to respect the culture will go a long way.

The legal conditions vary wildly. Evidence is pretty clear that lots of the Vietnamese in the fishing communities don't have it sorted and cannot afford to do so.I agree with you its a corrupt country, but some are more likely to get screwed over than others. As you do I really feel for Khmer Krom who are truly fucked by both sides.

Nevermind what I said about the hot winter in Cambodia earlier. It seems it is a worldwide phenomenon. It doesnt help when people take what the natural resources are given for granted...wasting water, food, and cant even get off their fat ass a mere 20 meters to buy things.

Viets own the telecoms (Vietnamese Military Telecom) and the sole scheduled airline into Snooky, and are the reason other scheduled airlines are blocked from flying into Sihanoukville. There are now flights from Siem Reap to Phu Quoc Island and Singapore to Phun Quac Island not to mention the ones there from Saigon and PQ Island doesn't have the casinos the Singapore people love. Someone is beholding to the Viets for their position(s).

Just three days after the government found no issue of shrine construction by Viets, CNRP has now decided that (alleged) Viet graves are the greatest problem facing the nation. I do wonder where the Vietnamese who died building the road were buried.
