According to the source, the suspect, Sith Thean, a 22-year-old Cambodian man living in the village, was later arrested in Kratie province by the Mondulkiri Provincial Police, in cooperation with Kratie provincial police.

Rubber worker charged with robbery cum murder

Mondulkiri Provincial Court yesterday charged a rubber worker and sent him to prison for the robbery cum murder of a 51-year-old woman on Monday.

Provincial military police deputy commander Colonel Nuon Bunthoeun said that the accused was identified as Thorn Siththean, 22, from Kratie province’s Chit Borei district, Thmar Kre commune.

The brutal murder took place at about 8pm on Monday at the victim’s house. The accused slashed the victim’s throat with a cleaver before fleeing.

Col Bunthoeun identified the victim as Veng Phea, a grocery vendor in Pech Chreada district’s Pou Chrei commune, in Androung Samaky Sen Chey village.

He said that the accused was charged with murder under Article 199 of the Criminal Code and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

“During interrogation after his arrest, the suspect admitted to committing the offence and said that he killed his victim to rob her because he did not have money to travel to Phnom Penh to meet with his girlfriend,” Col Bunthoeun said.

Yet such murders are unheard of where I call home but a daily occurrence here.
