Cambodia News (Siem Reap Province): On February 25, 2022, in Chan Hea village, Boeung Mealea commune, Svay Leu district, the villagers' earth ovens for producing charcoal from chopped trees were demolished by the authorities. It has been decided to shut down the charcoal businesses because the process of making traditional charcoal is too devastating for the environment. However, the authorities allowed the villagers to collect charcoal already produced before the permanent shutdown and destruction of the production sites.

Currently, 57 ovens belonging to 54 owners have been completely removed with their consent, after 30 days notice by the authorities. All of the charcoal burners are encouraged to do other businesses to protect the environment.

Rice husks make excellent charcoal briquettes with no sophisticated equipment needed.
They are virtually free at the mills.

The poor people will take another step backwards and revert to cooking their food by burning wood. Those that have lived on level E3 or E4 and have had to walk up to their apartment while the Cambodian family on E1 cook their food in the stairwell will know what I mean.
