The Hawker Siddeley Nimrod was a British Maritime Patrol Aircraft. It was an extensively modified de Havilland Comet 4C airliner. When the Nimrods were deployed to the south Atlantic during the Falklands War they were modified to carry up to four AIM-9G or AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles to allow them to both "discourage Argentine reconnaissance aircraft from spying on the UK Task Force" (that is a quote from the RAF Museum) and provide a self defence capability against interception.

It was such a shame to see this aircraft and it’s development come to such an ignominious and costly end, given its history.

Back in ‘97, fedex flight 14 (flight number according to wiki) suffered a similar fate.

The design changes developing the MD-11 from the DC-10 being cited as the cause of landing incidents. According to colleagues who flew the type, the aircraft handling had supposedly changed dramatically, with the MD-11 being very much less forgiving, whilst also being heavier and faster. Additional training was apparently developed to assist crews in dealing with this.

(The -max being a most recent example of some of the critical failings in aviation over the years.)

Fatigue was also cited in the freighter accidents. There’s been some debate whether fatigue is the primary cause, resulting in the aircraft getting away from the crew, or whether the design is more prone, and exacerbated by fatigue.
