Two Trains Collide and Derail Containers in Sihanoukville
Re: Two Trains Collide and Derail Containers in Sihanoukville
The driver probably knew they’d hit the other train a few miles away. Imagine feeling helpless in that few minutes it took.

So…timmydownawell wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 8:24 am Wouldn't have helped here. One train rear ended the other.
But at the very least they need more passing bays or whatever the correct rail term is. Sometimes the passenger trains sit for half an hour on a siding mid-trip, waiting for a freight train to pass.
What they really need is a schedule and a clock.
I’ve only used the train twice. On the first leg, it left late. On the second, it got cancelled and we had to get a coach home

Passing loops.
Single track is not a problem if worked properly and there is nowhere near the traffic to justify double tracking. I know the passenger train situation is pretty poor but from a freight perspective it's actually not that bad for containers. The Aussie guy who I think still runs it does so quite professionally.

I would presume that the passenger service could run faster and become more used if there was a double track. It was faster in the 1960s.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

That's not what I heard, but then again it has to be a pretty thankless task all the same.

There are just so many unofficial crossings, and the steel sleepers are ancient.John Bingham wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 11:49 amI would presume that the passenger service could run faster and become more used if there was a double track. It was faster in the 1960s.
They did their best with what they had to get both lines back up and running. But in the rainy season the northern line gets washed out.
Concrete sleepers and new (pre-loved) rails from Thailand should help upgrade the tracks:

The operator does not care about passenger service.John Bingham wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 11:49 amI would presume that the passenger service could run faster and become more used if there was a double track. It was faster in the 1960s.
Not profitable.
Senior management said as much to me.
