Surf Alert; Tidal waves on the move...
Grab your longboard..
An underwater volcano off Tonga erupted on Saturday, triggering tsunami warnings along parts of Australia’s east coast and an evacuation order for Lord Howe Island and Japan, as it triggered large waves in several South Pacific islands, where footage on social media showed waves crashing into coastal homes.
The marine warning for NSW’s coast prompted police and the State Emergency Service to evacuate Bondi Beach, in Sydney’s east, as a precaution overnight.
“The size of these waves means the threat is for the marine environment for the east coast of Australia, and for land on Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island; however the situation will be closely monitored and warnings updated as required,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.
All the Pacific nations, Japan, USA may be impacted to various degrees. New Zealand especially has tightened its grip on the tiller.

“If you are located in the water, or at water’s edge along from Lakes Entrance to 60 nautical miles east of Gabo Island including East Gippsland Coast, you are in danger. You should move immediately to higher ground,” the statement said. “Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami."
(that is just the warning for Victorian coast - all of Australia's east coast will be similar, and the whole Pacific Rim.)
Tsunamis are very strange beasts in the way they behave. It will be interesting to watch the wave patterns and time sequences of this one.
It may very well be relatively minor, but at the time of writing the situation is still ongoing.
lol. I just checked the Bondi surfcam, crowds are down but you would not exactly describe it as panic.

Boats in a marina in Northland, New Zealand got wrecked last night. They say it was a combination of a tsunami surge paired with already rough seas from the cyclone that's coming through now.
Satellite footage of the volcano going off are pretty impressive.

The simulations reveal further that the tsunami threat due to seismic origin to the Gulf of Thailand is almost non-existent.

One million people near the Gulf of Thailand are at risk of a tsunami height less than 3 m.
https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... n_Thailand
Both these opposite conclusions were obtained from modelling various scenarios from our local tsunami generator, the Manilla Trench, and their potential impact on the Gulf of Thailand.
However historical accounts and hydrological data and have only ever recorded very small tsunami effects in the gulf, and only on the southern section of Thailand's east coast. From memory we are talking less than 20cm.
Even with the most dramatic scenario it is hard to see any powerful effects hitting here - after the "wave" has bent right around to face the Cambodian coast.
Quite a bit of research has been conducted for various Bangkok risk assessments. The general consensus is.. Negligible.
I looked right into it one time, it was my last hope for a decent surf in Cambodia.
