Thailand is closing down most railway services at one of South East Asia’s most iconic grand central stations, Bangkok's Hua Lamphong.

The move marks the end of an era for the century-old travel hub, a place held in nostalgic memories for backpackers from all over the world.

Local residents are contesting plans to turn it into a commercial building.

Joe Cummings, author of Lonely Planet's Thailand guide, explains why so many people have fallen in love with Hua Lamphong.

Just saw they’ve open up The Beach beach again.
In 2008 150 visitors. 2018 5000!

I have to admit to loving trains. My Thai friend could never understand why, whenever I arrived at Don Mueang, I would wander over to the railway station to see if a train was due in the next half hour for Hua Lamphong, and if so take that and then a taxi from there.

Apparently, there is a lot of opposition, including within the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), to closing the station.

I've taken the train from Hua Lamphong to Chiang Mai, and also to Penang (x10).

So where do the trains stop these days?

Was still using it regularly pre-lockdown for football away games to places like Phitsanulok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Nice way to pass through the countryside at a leisurely stress free pace.

A train station with real character. When you see new shopping malls been built just round the corner in the heart of historic Chinatown I can't say I'm optimistic for any cultural heritage preservation type scenario like you see in Penang.

The idea is that everything will just go to Bang Sue (lucky Sue :D )

I have used that train station many a time but haven't really attached too much nostalgia to it. The best bit was the cold beer shops opposite where one could get slowly hammered waiting for a train. Compared to howrah it's like something out of toy town

That is sad.
It was a great place to depart from and arrive at. Many overnight trains I have boarded at Hua Lamphong.

They also had showers and a very affordable food court in the old days.
