Cambodia News, (Pailin Province): On December 29, 2021, a Pailin Provincial Prison Officer, who was involved in drug trafficking, was sent to Pailin Provincial Court after some media outlets sensitively reported this, following a leak from prisoners and some Pailin Provincial Prison officials.
As a result of this information, at 19:00 on December 26, 2021, the Pailin Provincial Anti-Drug Bureau found that a prisoner in Pailin Provincial Prison was storing illegal drugs (crystal methamphetamine) which was secretly brought into the prison. The prisoner, 17-year-old Samrong Rithy, was body-searched by guards and was found with a bag of drugs scotch-taped to his body.

The source added that according to the confession of the above inmate, the source of the bag of drugs was named as Ngoeur Chet, 28 years old, an officer of Pailin Provincial Prison, living in Ochra Keut village, Tuol Lvea commune, Pailin city, Pailin province. He was taken to the prison security office during the operation where the police discovered 1 package of white crystals (ice) weighing 67.35 grams.

In the above case, the specialized force brought a male suspect named Ngoeur Chet, a prison official, to the Anti-Drug Office of the Pailin Provincial Police for questioning and to build a case to be sent to court. The male prisoner, Samrong Rithy, is still in Pailin Provincial Prison.

CEO News Notes: This police raid in Pailin Prison follows allegations of general corruption by citizens earlier this month, and accusations on social media that Pailin Prison Directors were behind the sale of drugs and cellphones to prisoners. So it will be interesting to see if this prison officer is to be the fall guy, or will there be a real attempt to clean up the corruption in the Pailin prison system, starting from the top?
