Re: julian assange nicked
A British court has just refused extradition of Assange, citing the possible sentence of 175 years. Sorry, the newsflash was in German, so no link.

Just read...
"The US said it would appeal against the decision."
The shamelessness and audacity. Refusing to extradite that criminal Anne Sacoolas whilst insisting on reciprocity.

Here's a link and there are plenty of other pieces on the Guardian website on the subject.
It's a good result and casts doubt on the ability of the U.S. to get anyone extradited if they face decades in a supermax prison.
The reason for refusal is on mental health grounds, and that is a bit of a catch-all ground. This ruling also does nothing to protect journalism or future whistleblowers. The US are appealing and if the mental health ground ruling is upheld, that will be a potential way to avoid extradition.
The US have made the SuperMax prisons such extreme modes of mental torture that no civilised country should extradite anyone there unless they are mass murderers or Muslim terrorists. There is also a good argument not to extradite anyone to a system where a good defence is only available to the rich and the coercion of the plea bargain system; 3 years for a guilty plea or 30 years for a conviction. But that's a conversation for another thread.
