34 years living on phuket island, NEVER saw a truck drive sand to the beach, even after the tsunami, where they did do lots of moving the sand aroundrogerrabbit wrote: ↑Fri Dec 03, 2021 3:02 am Most of the famous beach around the world are "fake" in sense that they drive truck loads of sand to them. Miami being great example. They spend tens of millions each year to truck new sand to their beach. But it's worth it as people come to city because of the beaches and bring more in taxes than the cost of upkeeping beaches.

Re: The Kep Revival
They are natural beaches on Phuket, Richard - 'been there for a million years.
I think RRabit has a valid point, but maybe over-stated the situation.
Where you do get big problems on natural beaches, it is usually because man-made structures have caused interruptions to the sand flow along the coast.
Sea walls, groynes even piers can have disastrous consequences further along the coastline.
eg, looking at a photo of the old beach at Kep - on one side of the stone groyne/monument the sand has built up, but the coastline on the other side is scouring away badly > so a sea wall has been built for protection there > the water then races past this hard wall and will scour the coast even more at the next place down the line.
That's the classic syndrome when engineers start putting in "remedial" or "sand accretion" structures. Once you start it just snowballs.
The other main driver of beach loss; the natural reserves stored in the dunes behind the beach are often built over - which also means a much smaller buffer.
Beaches are not a narrow fixed instillation, they are small part of a constantly shifting, much larger system.
And that's not even talking about creating a whole new artificial beach at a place where it doesn't occur naturally.
(nb, at most beaches where sand is needed to be constantly replenished - they don't usually use trucks. They pump sand from offshore reserves)

Re: The Kep Revival
Rapid erosion of beach on the east coast of the USA is caused by the strong gulf currents, i believe.

Re: The Kep Revival
Did they tell you that ^^ was for a beach?
I don't know, but it looks like most of that sand is for condo's to be sitting to be on top rather than sunbakers.
More like land reclamation than beach making.
Where is the sand coming from?
Does it appear to be very similar to the sand on the natural beaches around there?
Do you know if they are putting in any sea walls to hold the most attenuated sections together in the straight-onshore monsoon winds, storms, waves and heavy rain?
- if so, how will the water be accessed,( it won't be gradual slope outside any walls)
Maybe some of the "coves" will hold sand - for a while.
Apart from the monsoons, you have strong longshore drifts/currents right around the Gulf of Thailand.
I'll repeat - sand on a natural beach is not static. It is a tiny percentage of a huge body of sand in the whole region that is constantly being shifted, replenished and denuded. And it requires a huge natural input.
It can be artificially recreated - but it is very difficult to achieve and expensive to maintain.
But who am i..... when it is designed by top level Cambodian big wigs and Chinese money?
If they say it's a beach, and it's going to stick, then they must be right.

Re: The Kep Revival
its going to be a beach, currently doing what Singapore did and "making " more land. sand will go on top of the dirt they are laying down, same like they did at the current beach>
its ALL local $$< property owners "donated" the access in exchange for 50% of the beach front> Goung to be parks, beach and such.
Cant pull the sand in form the sea as its all silt so will need come from??
there also doing a huge development project out at rabbit island
Kep will reclaim its position of the 60's as the primer destination beach resort and fuck the chinese, let them keep shv>
Good for everyone, hopefully will bring in some more eating options, which are really lacking in Kep, shopping and a 7/11
FYI: the beach in kep, the sand has been drifting out since they trucked it in, thats why u can walk out, even at high tide for what seems like forver till its over ur head

Good luck anyway Rich.
Sometimes I wish i could forget everything, or ignore everything, i have observed, studied and learned about our seas all thru my long and salty life.
I'm sure i would be more agreeable. Certainly more content and optimistic.

Official accused of encroaching coastal land
Officials and residents have brought accusations against a government official of encroaching part of a beach and diverting road projects.
The accusations were brought against the Royal Government delegate in charge of the Director General of the General Department of Finance, Sub-National Administration of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Keo Beng Wat.
The discovery was made when officials inspected the coastal road project to Angkoul Beach (PK10 + 166 PK10 + 435) in Angkoul Commune, Damnak Chang Eur District, Kep on December 8.
Sources from officials stated that that Beng Wat is currently treating Angkoul Beach as his own property under the pretext of buying land from the people. He also built concrete walls at the location and gradually filled the land. The stone walls he built is taking up the space that was meant for the road construction project and is making the road smaller.
Others said that Beng Wat diverted attention from his encroachment of state land by building another road and presenting it as a donation.
