Kampot authorities remove illegal structures to beautify riverbank
Kampot city authorities on Monday demolished an illegal structure built by Ses Yong, a Brigadier General with Brigade 11, on the riverbanks of Kampot bay.

Kampot city governor Leang Roeun Sothy told Khmer Times yesterday that his officials, in cooperation with provincial authorities led by Kampot deputy governor Seng Serey Bot, demolished the building, which was constructed on the riverbanks of Kampot bay in Kampong Bay, Khang Choeung village.

Roeun Sothy added that Brig Gen Yong had breached the law in three ways –dredged the canal to expand it, dug trenches that encroached on the bay and constructed a concrete structure that affected the natural environment. He appeared to have carried out his actions without fear of consequences from the Kampot governor.

“He has been informed many times about the illegal construction of this structure but as he did not follow the instructions, we decided to lead a team to dismantle it,” said Roeun Sothy.

“So far, we have observed that there are about 4 to 5 sites that seem to be violating the bay of Kampot city. We are in discussions with the provincial authorities committee to check them before we dismantle them,” he said.

Kampot deputy governor Seng Sereyboth told Khmer Times yesterday that Brig Gen Yong had been notified three times by the authorities but he did not appear to be afraid of the authorities’ power. On Monday, Kampot City authorities dismantled the structure.

“Our team, with the cooperation of the relevant authorities, has removed almost 100% of the construction sites that encroach on the beaches of Kampot city,” he said.

He added that provincial governor Mao Thonin has ordered the relevant authorities, especially the Kampot city governor, to inspect all such structures and remove any that are found to be in violation of the law.
