Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Puffer Fish Breakfast Kills Fisherman

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News (Kandal Province): On October 28, 2021, in Thmey village, Svay Ampear commune, Mok Kompul district, a 52-year-old fisherman, Thong Boeun, died after eating a pufferfish caught in the temporary fishing shelter by the Takiet dam.

Before the incident, during the night of October 28, from 2:17 am until 4:00 am, the victim and his 12-year-old daughter went to gather the captured fish. The rest of the catch was sold at the market by his wife, except the pufferfish. At 8:15 am, the wife came back and found out that the husband had eaten the pufferfish for breakfast.
At 10:00 am, the victim started to feel dizzy, suffering from a paralyzed tongue, and asked his wife to coin him to make him feel better. Nonetheless, it didn't help and the victim suffered from nausea until he vomited and foam came out of his mouth. The wife gave the victim honey and it still didn't help. She called her son to take the victim to the hospital, but unfortunately, the victim died once he arrived at the health center.
The police autopsy confirmed that the victim was poisoned by the pufferfish. The deceased was given to the family for the funeral.RIP.

I just do not understand why this keeps on happening. Surely people must know that Pufferfish are extremely poisonous?

Coining and honey, ffs. Even by home folk remedy standards that's poor.
