Kathina Buddhist festival in Cambodia (PHOTOS)
Kathina is a Buddhist festival which comes at the end of Vassa, the three-month rainy season retreat for Theravada Buddhists in Bangladesh (known as Kaṭhina Cībar Dān), Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The season during which a monastery may hold Kathina is one month long, beginning after the full moon of the eleventh month in the Lunar calendar (usually October).
It is a time of giving, for the laity to express gratitude to bhikkhus (Buddhist monks). Lay Buddhists bring donations to temples, especially new robes for the monks.

Cambodia Celebrating Kathina Festival
AKP Phnom Penh, October 18, 2019 --
Cambodia is celebrating the annual Kathina Festival, one of the biggest Buddhist festivals in the Kingdom, which falls this year from Oct. 14 to Nov. 11.
The term "Kathina", taken from Pali means pieces of cloth, or Chivara, Buddhist monks’ robes, offered by worshippers to the monks who did not leave their pagodas to collect alms as usual for three months (Chol Vossa or Rainy Retreat).
Every year, fifteen days after the Pchum Ben Festival (Festival for the Dead) succeeds the period of Kathina which lasts almost a month, from the first day of the waning moon of Assoch to the fifteenth day of the full moon of Kattik.
During this period of twenty-nine days, Cambodian people of all social backgrounds jointly contribute their donations, either in materials or cash, for the Buddhist monks to build achievements inside their respective pagodas or communities.
Overall, Kathina, celebrated every year throughout Cambodia, is a festival of solidarity between people from all walks of life.

Mohanikaya sect calls for continued peace after pilgrimage
Tep Vong, great supreme patriarch of the Mohanikaya sect, has called on everyone in the Kingdom to continue to promote Buddhism and its teachings.
Venerable Vong made the call during a pre-closing ceremony for the Dharma Yatra, a pilgrimage of peace spanning 2,000 kilometres across Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar.
The ceremony was held ahead of its conclusion on October 31. The pilgrimage’s official closing is to be held today at Angkor Wat in Siem Reap province.
Ven Vong said the pilgrimage is important because it helps disseminate Buddhist teaching in the five countries.
He said even though Buddhism has been around for more than 2,000 years, its teachings have not penetrated every practitioner in the world.
“For our society and the world to live in peace and prosperity forever, we together have to practice and disseminate the Buddhist dharma [teaching] widely in every country in the region and the world,” Ven Vong said.
