Siem Reap scam

Do you have a Cambodian trip report you want to share? Post it here, and feel free to link to your blog if it's a travel blog for Cambodia, South East Asia, or anywhere really. You can ask and answer questions about travel advice in Cambodia or just share your pictures and videos with us. Most people who live in or visit Cambodia have also checked out nearby countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and you can get to most of these countries by traveling overland, so put any travel plans, reviews or questions here. Discussions about dirt bike trails in here as well.

Siem Reap scam

Post by Johan »

OK, its an oldie but I want to put it up because of the sheer scale of it I recently observed again in great detail. All first hand observation.....

....wretched looking young kid wanders around among the tourists in the bus center of Siem Reap, begs for help from tourists, needs milk for his hungry/starving baby sister...blah blah. Young/new/naive/compassionate tourist is touched and wants to help, kid walks them over to the Mini-mart close by, the well meaning Barang tourist buys him a 16 dollar tin of baby formula. kid "grateful, tourist feeling good, moves on. Kid waits a few minutes, gives milk tin to his pimp/controller, whatever you want to call him, attacks next target. pimp/controller gathers enough milk tins from his kids, walks them back to the Mini-mart in big black plastic bag, and hands them in, Mini-mart owner gives him some form of written receipt to tally the taking (and re-taking) of the same tins who-knows-how-many-time during the night. The returned tins are placed conveniently at front of the shelves at the very front of the store.

Rinse - repeat. Some people out there busting their butts and others raping people's goodwill. It might be all OK, and some could even commend the street smarts and do-what-you-have-to-do attitude, but when you refuse to give and you get abused and told to fuck off by an 8 year old kid, that's pretty shit.

Fagin, the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates were all playing pool together when Fagin said, "Black ball, top right."

But the ball rattled in the pocket jaws before dropping into the opposite corner.

"You lose," said the Artful Dodger.

"Fuck off do I. Why?" asked Fagin.

The Dodger replied "Because you've got to pick a pocket, not two."
