Pchum Ben in Cambodia 2021/2022

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Heads up: Pchum Ben holidays are coming up.

Ministry to employers: Paid holiday for Pchum Ben
Ry Sochan | Publication date 18 September 2021 | 08:59 ICT

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has told factories and companies to give paid holiday for workers and staff on October 5-7 for Pchum Ben, and that those who voluntarily work during the three days are entitled to additional allowance, as per the labour law.

Cambodian Buddhists will observe Pchum Ben for 15 days from September 22 to October 6, with a primary three-day period of festivities from October 5-7 recognised as public holidays. The half-month is dedicated to their ancestors and is an occasion for families to get together.

To sustain productivity in the workplace, employers and worker representatives may organise work shifts during the holiday, but only with the consent of the staff members concerned, the ministry suggested in a statement on September 17.

The ministry ordered employers to maintain a list of staff who work over the three-day period for a ministerial inspection team to look over.

It highlighted that those who work over the holiday “are entitled to additional allowance equal to the wage that they would earn on normal working days”.

The ministry advised staff who take holiday to abide by its health counterpart’s prevention measures for managing risks related to Covid-19 and food poisoning.

Tomorrow is the first day of Pchum Ben.
Great opportunity to make small gifts of money.
If we wait until the end of the two week period, people have often gone to their province.

Police will be at the main pagodas during Pchum Ben celebrations to ensure that Covid-19 security measures are respected.

Police all set to beef up security during festival
Mom Kunthear | Publication date 21 September 2021 | 20:21 ICT

With the 15-day Pchum Ben festival approaching, Phnom Penh municipal police have mobilised nearly 2,000 officers for duties like maintaining security and public order during the celebrations, while municipal governor Khuong Sreng urged police in the capital to also pay attention to enforcement of Covid-19 preventive measures.

Speaking at a meeting on September 20, municipal police chief Sar Thet said public order would be the primary focus of law enforcement over the holiday, especially the strict implementation of Covid-19 preventive measures.

“For this year’s Pchum Ben, Phnom Penh will send nearly 2,000 police officers into the field to man key locations, especially all of the pagodas. More than 150 officers will be sent to pagodas in Phnom Penh to ensure a safe holiday. They will be positioned at entrances and exits to direct the flow of traffic at the pagodas as well,” he said.

What is Pchum Ben ?
Image
Pchum Ben (Khmer: ភ្ជុំបិណ្ឌ, Phchŭm Bĕn [pʰcum bən], lit. "Ancestor's Day") is a Cambodian 15-day religious festival, culminating in celebrations on the 15th day of the tenth month in the Khmer calendar, at the end of the Buddhist Lent, Vassa.

The day is a time when many Cambodians pay their respects to deceased relatives of up to 7 generations.[4] Monks chant the suttas in Pali language overnight (continuously, without sleeping) in prelude to the gates of hell opening, an event that is presumed to occur once a year, and is linked to the cosmology of King Yama originating in the Pali Canon.
During this period, the gates of hell are opened and manes (spirits) of the ancestors are presumed to be especially active. In order to combat this, food-offerings are made to benefit them, some of them having the opportunity to end their period of purgation, whereas others are imagined to leave hell temporarily, to then return to endure more suffering; without much explanation, relatives who are not in hell (who are in heaven or otherwise reincarnated) are also generally imagined to benefit from the ceremonies.

Changed $1k to Riel last week and bought a stack of ang pao (red packets) at IBC. The joys of having friends who count me as family.

Treasure and nurture your friendships. In these uncertain times, it would be good to know that if the inevitable were to happen, you won't be alone in some desolate pagoda with nobody to send you off.

Tirokudda Kanda: Hungry Shades Outside the Walls

Outside the walls they stand,
& at crossroads.
At door posts they stand,
returning to their old homes.
But when a meal with plentiful food & drink is served,
no one remembers them:
Such is the kamma of living beings.

Thus those who feel sympathy for their dead relatives
give timely donations of proper food & drink
— exquisite, clean —
[thinking:] "May this be for our relatives.
May our relatives be happy!"

And those who have gathered there,
the assembled shades of the relatives,
with appreciation give their blessing
for the plentiful food & drink:
"May our relatives live long
because of whom we have gained [this gift].
We have been honored,
and the donors are not without reward!"

For there [in their realm] there's
no farming,
no herding of cattle,
no commerce,
no trading with money.
They live on what is given here,
hungry shades
whose time here is done.

As water raining on a hill
flows down to the valley,
even so does what is given here
benefit the dead.
As rivers full of water
fill the ocean full,
even so does what is given here
benefit the dead.

"He gave to me, she acted on my behalf,
they were my relatives, companions, friends":
Offerings should be given for the dead
when one reflects thus
on things done in the past.
For no weeping,
no sorrowing
no other lamentation
benefits the dead
whose relatives persist in that way.
But when this offering is given, well-placed in the Sangha,
it works for their long-term benefit
and they profit immediately.

In this way
the proper duty to relatives has been shown,
great honor has been done to the dead,
and monks have been given strength:

The merit you've acquired
isn't small.

Of course some ideas like "monks opening doors to hell by chanting" are just folk ideas, but if asking "Now, Master Gotama, does that gift accrue to our dead relatives? Do our dead relatives partake of that gift?", one would gain reasonable and factual answer in Janussonin Sutta: To Janussonin.
As for those who might be out of reach, longlife of the Dhamma through a present Sangha in the world, to meet one day the teachings leading to higher and beyond, giving strength to the Sangha, is of most benefit for long time help for all incl. ones beloved, and of great fruit for one self as well.
