I happened to read this today, among other things - but this caught my eye, the big man seems to have a good sense of humour.

Let Us Use Kroma (Scarf) In Place of Masks

Let me take this chance to talk about coronavirus that Ambassador Wang Wentian already mentioned. Today I have a scarf or Kroma around my neck. It is a coronavirus era necktie. Let us carry and use Kroma. This will help prevent masks sellers from jacking up the prices. I will wear the scarf to the graduation and diploma presenting ceremony tomorrow. There is nothing wrong about it […] I received medical equipment/supplies – medical protective wears, etc. worth nearly one million USD, produced in Kompong Cham and Svay Rieng provinces. China bought some of the protective wears from Cambodia. I thought initially to offer them to China in case they needed them more urgently. The Chinese Ambassador told me the disease subsided and returned them for Cambodia’s needs. China would also send us medical tools/equipment to help Cambodia fight Covid-19.

Two shots of Sinovac? Sure, thanks.

Booster shot of Sinovac? Hmm, ok, can't hurt.

Fourth shot of Sinovac? NO THANK YOU.

If 3 shots don't work, then it's time to conclude the vaccine doesn't work and go and get a better one.
A couple of locals I know both posted this week they'd received their third third shots:

The first, who'd received two (Indian) AZ shots, received a Japanese AZ shot; and the second I don't know which he got for his first two, but he received Johnson & Johnson for his third.

Interested to see what we end up getting.

Laos bans travel within, to and from capital
19/09/21 16:18
VIENTIANE, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) - Lao capital Vientiane's administration has imposed a ban on all travels to and from Vientiane and within four major districts of the capital city from Sunday to September 30, 2021.

The four prohibited districts are Chanthaboury, Sisattanak, Sikhottabong and Xaysettha. Travels to particular areas in other three districts namely Xaythany, Hadxayfong and Naxaythong in the Lao capital were also prohibited.

The move came after Vientiane witnessed a rocket surge in community cases on Saturday, when the National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced that 467 new cases had been recorded nationwide over the past 24 hours including 384 locally transmitted cases with 265 reported in Vientiane, the highest daily community infection ever recorded in the capital city.

More than 90 percent of the local cases in Vientiane were linked to a garment factory in Chanthaboury district. Up to 260 out of more than 1,000 workers employed by the factory were confirmed positive to COVID-19 on Saturday.

According to Lao News Agency (KPL), as of Saturday, the country has recorded a total of 18,814 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 3,665 active cases and 16 deaths.

Chinese Traditional-Medicine Pills Distributed in Siem Reap City as part of the Country’s COVID-19 Campaign

According to the health authorities, this will help prevent the transmission of the disease

SIEM REAP--Over two million pills of China’s traditional medicine Lianhua Qingwen Capsules on Sept. 17 were distributed to people in Siem Reap City as part of the efforts to stem the transmission of COVID-19 in the city.
Minister of Health Mam Bunheng said that the distribution campaign was carried out in four communes namely Chreav, Kork Chak, Slor Kram and Svay Dangkum communes that have been designated as red zones in which the risk of transmission of the disease is very high.

“This medicine delivery campaign is a measure to prevent further transmission in Siem Reap City,” Bunheng said, adding that the traditional medicine pills were given to those who are sick as well those who are not infected. He added that distribution will be expanded to other areas, again to curb coronavirus transmission.
However, the minister stressed, this medicine is effective to treat sickness, but one must get vaccinated and continue to strictly adhere to health measures including washing one’s hands, wearing a mask and social distancing.

The campaign was carried out as Siem Reap Province recently became one of the provinces hardest hit by COVID-19, prompting the provincial administration to impose a one-week lockdown in parts of Siem Reap City starting Sept. 17 to prevent further spread.

648 New Cases Detected Countrywide

On Sept. 18, the Ministry of Health said in a press statement that 648 new COVID-19 cases had been identified in the country. Among them, 160 cases involved patients coming from abroad.

Meanwhile, 492 patients have made a full recovery and been discharged from hospital while seven patients have succumbed to the disease, according to the ministry’s statement.

These latest cases have brought the total number of cases to 103,482 since the start of the pandemic in Cambodia, with 96,767 patients having recovered. The death toll due to COVID-19 stands at 2,096 persons.

Regarding the vaccination campaign, as of Sept. 17, a total of 11,508,143 people, which amounted to 72.55 percent of the total population, had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while 10,114,802 people had received two doses. Moreover, 816,681 people have already received booster shots, the Ministry of Health said.

Horse owners are struggling to buy ivermectin as Americans scramble for the unproven COVID-19 treatment and Amazon sellers cash in by gouging prices, reports say

Horse owners, who use equine ivermectin to deworm their animals, are struggling to get their hands on the drug as Americans scramble to buy the unproven COVID-19 treatment, according to reports.

Those hoping to purchase the antiparasitic treatment for their livestock have been facing empty shelves, The Washington Post reported.

Demand has rocketed in recent weeks, The Washington Post said, because high-profile figures have touted ivermectin as an alternative – but unproven – remedy for COVID-19.

Research on bats in South East Asia continues :

Cambodia bat researchers on mission to track origin of COVID-19

STUNG TRENG, Cambodia, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Researchers are collecting samples from bats in northern Cambodia in a bid to understand the coronavirus pandemic, returning to a region where a very similar virus was found in the animals a decade ago.

Two samples from horseshoe bats were collected in 2010 in Stung Treng province near Laos and kept in freezers at the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC) in Phnom Penh.

Tests done on them last year revealed a close relative to the coronavirus that has killed more than 4.6 million people worldwide.

An eight-member IPC research team has been collecting samples from bats and logging their species, sex, age and other details for a week. Similar research is going on in the Philippines.

"We hope that the result from this study can help the world to have a better understanding about COVID-19," field coordinator Thavry Hoem told Reuters, as she held a net to catch bats.

Host species such as bats typically display no symptoms of pathogens, but these can be devastating if transmitted to humans or other animals.

Dr. Veasna Duong, Head of Virology at the IPC, said his institute had made four such trips in the past two years, hoping for clues about the origin and evolution of the bat-borne virus.

"We want to find out whether the virus is still there and ... to know how the virus has evolved," he told Reuters.

Deadly viruses originating from bats include Ebola and other coronaviruses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

But Veasna Duong said humans were responsible for the devastation caused by COVID-19, due to interference and destruction of natural habitats.

"If we try to be near wildlife, the chances of getting the virus carried by wildlife are more than normal. The chances of the virus transforming to infect humans are also more," he said.

The French-funded project also aims to look at how the wildlife trade could be playing a part, said Julia Guillebaud, a research engineer at the IPC's virology unit.

"(The project) aims to provide new knowledge on wild meat trade chains in Cambodia, document the diversity of betacoronaviruses circulating through these chains, and develop a flexible and integrated early-detection system of viral spill-over events," Gillebaud said.

When these tourist routes start operating, and filling up, and the pandemic subsides (fingers crossed), what will it take to make governments decide to remove this criteria and allow everyone to travel? It will take an agreement by many nations all at once, because these bans are for foreigners, not their own citizens.

Those who have chosen to go unvaccinated (and I am not being judgemental) are going to be in a bit of a jam. They could face extremely long air travel bans with virtually no political will to throw them a lifeline. Governments ask, encouraged and pleaded for people to get vaccinated and some people still said GFY.

Soon they will be demanding governments to help them out and those same governments will be telling them to GFY. And nobody will care a jot.

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration will require all international travelers coming into the United States to be fully vaccinated and tested for Covid-19 under a new system that will open up air travel to vaccinated foreign nationals from dozens of countries for the first time since the early days of the pandemic.

Starting in early November, foreign nationals will be allowed to fly into the U.S. if they are fully vaccinated and able to show proof of vaccination prior to boarding a U.S.-bound flight, White House Covid coordinator Jeffrey Zients said.
