That makes 2 English judges that have recently fallen for the attractive damsel in distress ploy. Andrews J in this case and Warby J in the Markle case. I'm not saying that Depp didn't beat Heard up btw but she certainly won an overwhelming victory such that Depp has obviously been advised he has a good chance of winning, especially in view of her (alleged) lies about the donations. The Daily Mail has said it will appeal in the Merkel case. Merkel only had to plead emotional distress to get the judge swooning.
In 1987 Caulfield J famously spoke from the bench about Mary Archer who had given evidence in support of her husband's suit for libel against the Star (who had reported that Archer slept with prostitutes):
From https://www.nytimes.com/2001/07/20/worl ... years.html
Lady Archer's 1987 testimony has entered judicial annals here because of the rapturous effect it had on the judge, Sir Bernard Caulfield, in his jury instruction.
''Your vision of her will never disappear,'' he said then. ''Has she elegance? Has she fragrance? Would she have, without the strain of this trial, radiance?'' And of Lord Archer, he said, ''Is he in need of cold, unloving, rubber-insulated sex in a seedy hotel?'' The comments were considered a key element in his court victory. Archer was awarded $800,000 in damages.
In 2001, the newspaper had its revenge as Archer was jailed for perjury in the 1987 trial. Mary Archer gave evidence again but they finally found a judge who was not a sucker for the old damsel in distress routine (or she had got too old to play it).
Heaven help these judges if they ever come to PP!

Johnny Depp loses bid to appeal against ‘wife beater’ libel ruling
London: Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has lost his bid in London’s Court of Appeal to challenge a verdict last year in a libel case that concluded he was a “wife beater”, meaning his attempt to restore his reputation will shift to US legal action.
“As we have said, it is not easy to persuade this court to overturn the findings of a trial judge on purely factual questions,” the two Court of Appeal judges said in their judgment. “We do not believe that there is a real prospect of it being prepared to do so in this case.”
Depp’s lawyer said he would now focus on a US case he has brought against Heard. He has also filed a $US50 million ($65 million) defamation lawsuit against Heard in a Virginia court over an opinion piece she wrote in The Washington Post, and that case is ongoing.

Johnny Depp says Hollywood is boycotting him as his latest film hasn’t been released in the US
Johnny Depp believes Hollywood is boycotting him because his film “Minamata” has yet to debut in the US.
In July, “Minamata” director Andrew Levitas accused MGM of “burying” Depp’s film due to legal and “personal issues.”
“Imagine the devastation when they learned this past week, that despite an already successful global roll out, MGM had decided to ‘bury the film’ (acquisitions head Mr. Sam Wollman’s words) because MGM was concerned about the possibility that the personal issues of an actor in the film could reflect negatively upon them and that from MGM’s perspective the victims and their families were secondary to this,” Levitas wrote in a letter, according to Deadline.
Experts said that Depp’s career in Hollywood could be over after several years of legal problems and controversy.
“I predict his career may never recover,” Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told Insider’s Zac Ntim. “Disney has lost interest in Depp for its ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise, and I can’t imagine any other major studio wanting to work with him. He’s going to be the next Harvey Weinstein.”
