Negative effect of lowering the drink driving limit

Post by UKJ »

Scotland lowered the drink driving limit to 50mg two weeks ago. I 've read Policemen say it's pointless, as the real problem is people 3x + the limit. The 50mg limit, has everyone scared to drink if they have to drive the next day. I can only have a good night out on a Friday or Sunday, rather than any random night. And there is nobody to drink with on a Sunday, as they have work on the Monday. So that's just a Friday!!! What will this mean for bars, and the tax take? For stress, socialising, and the general mood of a country that's known to enjoy a good drink? Scotland is going to be the worlds leading nanny state, for sure.

Don't agree with the laws, but that's really stretching it, about getting nabbed the next day. I knew a stockbroker who got busted after a night of blow & cocktails once, but he was headed to work at 5AM (West Coast). One pretty much has to hit something or be driving like a blind man to get breathalyzed during the day - no ?

I was quite surprised how the new reduced limit compared with the rest of Europe.

Zero - Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia (drivers with less than three years experience), Germany (less than two years experience or aged under 21)
20mg - Estonia, Poland, Sweden, Cyprus (south), Ireland (learner drivers only), Latvia (less than two years experience), Lithuania (less than two years experience), Greece (less than two years experience), Luxembourg (less than two years experience and professional drivers), France (bus drivers only)
24mg - Slovenia
30mg - Germany (for those involved in an accident)
40mg - Lithuania
50mg - Scotland, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany (if not involved in an accident), Gibraltar, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus (north)
80mg - England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Malta

They set up check points this time if year, just to be festive! I've known them to have checkpoints during the year to check people going to work on Monday mornings, but not heard of any for a while. They might do more now.
