Police Confiscate More Than 4 Kilograms of 'Chinese Tea' Meth in Phnom Penh Raids

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): According to the National Police General Commission, on July 30, 2021 at 16:40, the authority of the Department of Anti-Drug Crimes (A1) led by Lt. Gen. In Song, Deputy Director of the Department and Lieutenant Colonel Hong Vannarith, Director of Office (A1), in cooperation with the Phnom Penh Municipal Police, coordinated by Mr. Sith Vann, Deputy Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, investigated and raided two locations in Phnom Penh in search of drugs.

Police received information about a large supply of methamphetamine being stocked and trafficked in the capital, and they found over four kilograms in the two locations: at a delivery point for the Vireak Buntham Transport Company on Monireth Street, corner of Mao Tse Toung Street, in Khan Boeung Keng Kang, and at a house located in Khan Meanchey. In addition, police seized smaller amounts of MDMA and ketamine.

A suspect, a Cambodian male national named Hun Sareth, alias Run, 31 years old, was taken into custody and is being held for further questioning. His role in the business is not yet known.

The total amount of drugs seized in the two raids weighed 4,147.40 grams: 4114 grams of methamphetamine (ICE), 12.30 grams of ketamine and 21.10 grams of ecstasy (MDMA). The methamphetamine was wrapped as Chinese tea in the traditional South East Asian manner.
Police also confiscated 2 motorcycles and 2 mobile phones.

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): The Supreme Court on the morning of September 14, 2022 adjourned the hearing on the appeal of one of the accused in connection with the transportation and trafficking of nearly 4 kg of drugs, and money laundering at two separate locations in Phnom Penh, from 2000 to July 30, 2021.

The first police raid took place at the delivery point of Vireak Bun Tham Company on Monireth Street, corner of Mao Tse Toung Street, Sangkat Toul Svay Prey, Khan Boeung Keng Kang, and the second target was at house number 10, Tnot Chrum village, Sangkat Boeung Tumpun II, Khan Meanchey, Phnom Penh.

Mr. Soeng Panhavuth, Chief Judge of the Supreme Court, stated that the accused was Hun Sareth, a 30-year-old man living in Sangkat Tuol Svay Prey, Khan Keng Kang, Phnom Penh. He was arrested by police on July 30, 2021, at the Tnot Chrum Village location.

In this case, Hun Sareth was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on March 17, 2021 to 28 years imprisonment and a fine of 50 million Riels to pay into the state budget under the charges of: "Illegal production, storage, transportation and trafficking of narcotics, Article 40, Article 47, Article 48 and Article 38 of the Law on Drug Control and the Law on Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing."

After the arrest, the police confiscated 4114 grams of methamphetamine (ICE), 12.30 grams of ketamine and 21.10 grams of MDMA: a total of 4,147.40 grams of drugs, as well as 2 motorcycles and 2 mobile phones.

The defendant Hun Sareth first appealed to the Court of Appeal who upheld his sentence. He then went on to appeal to the Supreme Court, who have not yet announced their decision.
