Happy Independence Day
Happy Independence Day
To all our American readers and members,
"Have a nice day"
(We honestly had no idea that a few pennies of a bale of tea would be such a deal breaker)

Thank you for the good wishes.
I do have to point out that it wasn't the Tea Act which started the whole thing. In 1764 parliament passed the Sugar Act followed soon after by the Stamp Act in 1765. The reason for the Acts was to pay for the debt from the Seven Years War which had ended with Britain deeply in debt. These were followed by the Townshend Acts which included the controversial general warrants for searching private property looking for smuggled goods. The entire operation of custom duties and cracking down on smuggled goods quickly became very corrupt.
John Dickinson penned his twelve essays called "Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania". And thus the movement towards independence began. Ironically, some of the taxes imposed were repealed in 1770 (about the same time as the Boston Massacre) but the taxation of tea never was and in fact the Tea Act of 1773 actually allowed the East India Company to import tea directly from China WITHOUT paying the duties fees in Britain (I think the company was legally obligated to import all its tea to Britain first and pay duties on it - the Act allowed them to import directly to the Colonies and only pay the existing tea tax in the colonies. This would undercut the price of smuggled tea and put colonists out of business.) And the Boston Tea Party soon followed!
There were many other flashpoints of contention between the colonies but its likely the Sugar Act was what got the ball rolling!

(be gracious, Brody. I am.)
Happy Birthday, children.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
sincerely, 'All the very very best for your country, in which we all hold great hope.
- especially, right now.
