What we learned from nature: a reflection of Cambodian Eats!

Focus – Ready for Tomorrow, a sister publication of Southeast Asia Globe, recently published a multimedia series titled Cambodian Eats! With financial support from the Earth Journalism Network (EJN), the series focuses on Cambodia’s natural resources and the environment, highlighting their connection to local cultures and cuisines. The Focus team selected five provinces representing four geographical regions of Cambodia – highland, lowland, river, and coastal.

Cambodian Eats! addresses environmental issues through the lens of travel and foods that are synonymous with different places in Cambodia, as a way to capture the audience’s attention and engage with them in a more personal way. The series incorporates videos, feature articles, photos, and illustrations to highlight each location, showing the connection between local communities, the land they live on and the food they grew up with, while at the same time exploring how people’s lives are changing due to changes in the environment.

The project’s core audience is Cambodian youth and is designed to raise awareness around the social impacts associated with environmental issues. Through interviews with experts and professionals, Cambodian Eats! offers solutions that young people can consider implementing in their communities and personal lives.

It’s far easier to copy than to be unique in the Kingdom of Wonder - witness the multiple pharmacies right next to each other, etc., then complete originality.

It’s been a while since I’ve been up there. Way pre-pandemic. There wasn’t even a provincial stand at the time. So that’s an improvement. With the new show influencing youth to bring out unique foods and cultural traditions from each province, maybe different regional cuisines will happen.

Possibly even be a bulwark against the Chinese wave sweeping the Kingdom now. If the Chinese become more than 50% (more likely 70-80%) of the population (think Chinaville), all of Khmer culture might be threatened to be replaced.
