Philippines' Duterte issues gag order on cabinet over South China Sea spat

https://www.yahoo.com/news/philippines- ... 59382.html

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte barred his cabinet from talking about the South China Sea in public on Monday after weeks of strong rebukes by his ministers against China's conduct in the contested waters.

Tensions between the Philippines and its giant neighbour have escalated since March, with Manila filing daily diplomatic protests over the presence of hundreds of Chinese fishing vessels in disputed portions of the South China Sea.

"This is my order now to the cabinet, and to all and sundry talking for the government, to refrain from discussing the West Philippine Sea with anybody," Duterte said in a televised national address.

Manila refers to the South China Sea as the West Philippine Sea.

"If we talk, we talk but just among us," he said.

Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, where about $3 trillion worth of ship-borne trade passes each year. But in 2016, an arbitration tribunal in The Hague ruled that that claim, which China bases on old maps, was inconsistent with international law.

Since taking office in 2016, Duterte has pursued warmer ties with China, setting aside the territorial spat in exchange for Beijing's promise of billions of dollars in loans, aid and investment, much of which are forthcoming.

Duterte's defence and foreign ministers and his legal adviser have taken strong positions against Beijing over the presence of hundreds of Chinese vessels within Manila's 200-mile exclusive economic zone.

The Philippines believes the Chinese vessels are manned by militia, describing their presence as "swarming and threatening" as it continues to demand for the flotilla to be withdrawn immediately.

Duterte has rebuffed a call from China to withdraw vessels from disputed areas of the South China Sea and said he would not bow to pressure, even if it jeopardises his friendship with Beijing.

Beijing's embassy in Manila was not immediately available for comment outside office hours. Chinese diplomats have said the boats were sheltering from rough seas and no militia were aboard.

Interesting, after clicking play, I got a dropdown message from Fraudbook asking whether I will approve FB being able to track me. I clicked Don't Allow. It instantly stopped playing the video. On the CEO settings, long ago, I believe I denied unsocial media to track me.

Does everybody understand what this squabble is about?

It is a Philippine politician telling China to Flock Off in very blunt terms.

Then in jumps this very suss US think tank funded by Soros and the Kochs which has an agenda of protecting the stability of existing Wall St high-capitalist interests. - with a lecture on what Philippine foreign policy should be and good table manners

I don't particularly want to go to war either, if it is avoidable. But it is certainly not to protect the interests of this bunch of "don't rock the boat" trillionairres.
Make no mistake - this is part of a big Wall St push back against confronting China.
(incidently, Kissinger seem to be part of it too)

PS NB - this think tank, whatever their name is ( i can't be bothered to go back to the OP) is flying in the face of current US policy and the views expressed by nearly every member here.
They are the F***wits here. Not the good-hearted right-thinking hot-headed Philippineo lad.

Seems to me that despite the references to the US on this topic (including my earlier post about Duterte siding up with the PRC), the subject of this topic is a Philippines vs China issue only. That is, the Philippines wants those Chinese fishing boats (with military escorts) out of Philippines territory. Plain and simple.

Sure, there are broader South China Sea issues affecting other countries but I think they belong on other topics..either existing or new..but not here.

This habit undermines your credibility as you often get these accusations wrong.
Baseless allegations have no place in debate and are the prime tool of propagandists.
I will add that Soros is one of the chief bogeymen of the Q cucks clan.
So your rather opaque diatribe above seems like you are conflating some rabid q tard post with a legitimate news source.
