Hit and Run Leaves Woman Unconscious, with Baby Son Left All Alone

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

You take out insurance to drive on public roads, is that not a legal requirement in Cambodia? .And if you have insurance you are covered in most instances unless drunk or reckless. Please let me know if I am mistaken!

I'm sure stopping for red lights is probably a legal requirement too. From what I understand legal requirements don't mean much when driving.

I really can't understand in these kind of situations how a driver involved in an accident could just drive away. This incident leaving a injured woman and child in the road, is just unthinkable.
It happens a lot in China too. The driver (if caught) will probably have to pay medical costs and compensation. It's not unheard of for people to get fake receipts from the hospital, the 'compensation' could be something like being forced to pay out after the victim claims a minor bruise ruined his chances of playing pro basketball where he would have made millions... in other words the system gets abused, to the point where there are people who will jump in front of a barely moving car then pretend to be hurt and claim compensation. Even a reasonable medical expenses/compensation claim could be enough to financially ruin your whole extended family if you're a poor farmer or something so they often choose to do a runner. I don't know much about the Cambodian system but I assume it's not too different.

I'm not condoning it at all but I can understand why drivers choose to run, hopefully they at least feel bad about it but they probably see it as a 'my family or your family so tough shit' type of situation.
What you have described is accident scam...
I highly doubt khmer would do such a thing here and she was on a bike with her child...
:please: Are you kidding?? Khmer may have been the first to concoct this idea!

Haha, come on. Anytime you hit anyone in the back you are to blame. Keep your distance at all times, the car in front might need to slam on their brakes if a kid run into the road or anything else..

In the UK, the scammers like to disconnect the brake lights.

It was rife in the UK , with an additional twist - Cash for Crash.

All parties were in on it. Party A, covered by insurance on a cheap low value car deliberately drives into the back of party B, a car with 3 or 4 adults in it who all make claims for personal injury plus the bogus repairs on the car.

The insurance industry, after being thoroughly fleeced for years, have got a lot better at detecting these claims.

Is it possible for you to make a post where you aren't blaming Cambodians for everything? We get it, you hate them, but it gets tedious.

From asking my colleagues, seems it may not be a legal requirement, but very few people in Cambodia insure anything, whether themselves with heath/accident insurance, their motos or their other property. I'm fairly sure that a some of the population don't even understand the concept of insurance, my other half certainly didn't when I took out insurance for her moto.

First, Khmers have little regard for other peoples lives. When I first landed in the Kingdom, if you killed anyone on the road it would cost you $250. That's it. Life still means very little even with the price a tad bit higher. BTW, don't judge a medical situation on a photo, we don't know if she is suffering from internal injuries which is very normal after an accident.

Bottom line for me while living or traveling in SE Asia, I never ever ride on a bike. Pure stupidity.
