270k Tonnes of Bananas Jan-July
Prathna On August 9, 2021 - 3:19 pm
Cambodia is looking to China to further ramp up banana exports which surged 61 percent Jan-July this year compared to the first seven months of 2020.

Exports rose to 270,222 tonnes of fresh bananas during the measurement period, 40 percent of which went to China and 11 percent to Vietnam.

China and Cambodia signed a free trade agreement last year which has helped the Kingdom’s farmers ship more bananas, mangoes and milled rice there, helping offset declining sales in Europe.

Bananas from Cambodia and Vietnam have overtaken Philippine exports to China, according to a report in BusinessMirror in April. The Philippines Banana Planter and Exporter Association said export profits dropped 15 percent because the Coronavirus outbreak increased shipping costs and delayed transport. This year almost 40 percent of China’s banana imports have come from Cambodia and Vietnam, the report said.

That's how much I pay for a kilo of finger bananas in the local market, so it seems like a good deal. A huge number of rural people supplement their income with small scale farming. Getting them to the market is the main issue, they don't last long while ripe. That's why they use natural gases to ripen them in the west before they can be put on sale. A whole lot of fruit just gets left to rot because there isn't an economical way to get it to the market.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Fresh banana exports drop 13% in Q1 as China restrictions bite
Hom Phanet | Publication date 05 April 2022 | 21:22 ICT

Cambodia exported 103,626.84 tonnes of fresh bananas in the first quarter of this year, down by 13.46 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries reported.

China and Vietnam imported 98,530.26 tonnes and 5,096.58 tonnes over the January-March period, respectively, the ministry said.

Agriculture minister Veng Sakhon largely ascribed the decline in shipments of the fruit abroad – from nearly 120,000 tonnes in January-March 2021 – to fresh restrictions placed by China on Cambodian bananas.

He told The Post on April 5 that Beijing imposed the trade sanction over claims that at least one consignment of Cambodian bananas arriving on Chinese shores had been found to be contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 – the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

The agriculture ministry reported that last year, Cambodia exported 423,168.97 tonnes of fresh bananas, up by more than 27 per cent. China was the top buyer at 376,961.60 tonnes, followed by Vietnam (45,193.37 tonnes), Japan (533.52 tonnes) and Singapore (480.48 tonnes).
