LONDON (Reuters) -The first operational deployment of Britain's flagship aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth to Asia will show countries such as China that Britain believes in the international law of the sea, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday.
Johnson said the Carrier Strike Group, which will interact with more than 40 nations on the deployment through the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and South China Sea to Japan, would project Britain's values as well as its military capabilities.
"One of the things we'll be doing clearly is showing to our friends in China that we believe in the international law of the sea, and in a confident but not a confrontational way, we will be vindicating that point," he told broadcasters on board the carrier in Portsmouth Naval Base, south England.
"We don't want to antagonise anybody, but we do think that the United Kingdom plays a very important role, with friends and partners, the Americans, the Dutch, the Australians, the Indians many, many others, in upholding the rule of law, the international rules-based system on which we all depend."

I would have thought aircraft carriers obsolete by now, considering guided weapon tech etc
A bit of willy waggling from the brits I suppose

Re: UK's Johnson tells China: We believe in rule of the sea
Outside of a major shooting war by major powers (aka the next World War) aircraft carriers are highly effective.
However, if this degenerates into the next World War, then it will get messy and might even escalate into nuke exchanges.
One British aircraft carrier isn’t going to tip the scales either way in the next World War.
Short of the next World War, it indicates British commitment to freedom of navigation over the Chinese People’s Party imaginary line.

It cost £6,500,000,000. They could of completely renewed the London Underground with that money. And finished Crossrail.
Nah, lets buy a great big ship and stuff it full of American planes and technology. Yee hawwwww...
'Eggs in one basket':
Oh dear... what happens if somebody sinks it? Everyone else in the navy might as well go home.

'Eggs in one basket':
"It will be a strike carrier that will project power around the world.
"However, it will require most of the Royal Navy to support it and protect it, so it means we will in a sense design the navy around one carrier battle-group. That is pretty powerful, but it means putting a lot of eggs in one basket."

ffs
It is the Law of the Sea - Idiot.
A fucking PR walz around the Mediterranean and then an empty flag flying exercise to demonstrate the pathetic irrelevance of the UK to this half of the world.
Exactly the same attitude as sending the sacrificial (they knew perfectly well what the result would be) outdated battleships Prince of Whales and the Repulse to "save" Singapore in 1941 with totally inadequate air defence and destroyers as escort.
Sunk by the Japs in 5 seconds flat.
Not only a crime against their own sailors and a betrayal of their promises to their Far Eastern empire - but just plain British pompous imperial stupidity.
G'donya Lord High Admiral Boris, you carry the traditions well.

Better than getting on your knees and waiting for the next chinese attack..
We are in a world war...or have you not noticed the chinese systematic battle plan from covid to fentanyl to economic warfare?
I am not a fan of boris and I sure wish the US had spent trillions on infrastructure instead of iraq and afghanistan..
But, the sea lanes are important to free trade.
The US sure as fuck is not going to do shit.
They caved.

Hey Biffo (<, incidentally, that is an aussie slang for a bit of a punch up at the pub, or the usually frontline small ceremonies of old time union/workers street demo's).
No point going in with just empty gestures, or worse - with blind deadly stupidity.
This is a contest, more than any the West has engaged in for a very long time, that is going to demand the absolute Smarts.
We will be sunk as quick and as deep as the Prince of Whales if don't have that.
As for the US, i don't think they have walked, at all. With the new administration they are at last starting to get realistically tough. And to develop the basics of an effective cooperative policy.
Hey, I would love Britain, France and the USA back in the neighbourhood. Don't get me wrong.
But they need to realise that they don't run the show anymore - not since Singapore, Dien Bien Phu and The Roof.
Hopefully they will smarten up this time around.
And update. It is us East Hemispherians who will ultimately be running the show - because we have most at stake, and are the ones who are most in the know.
Seriously, i'm not trying to be facetious about this (just colourful). Work with the Quad, ASEAN et al.
And PS - Banning Boris from The Admiralty office would be a very good place to start getting smart.
