Is Cambodia a Paradise for Digital Nomads ?
Cambodia Ranked in Top Ten Countries for Remote Workers
20/05/2021
Cambodia has been ranked among the top ten nations for remote workers (digital nomads) to work from according to Club Med.
The French travel and tourism operator, Club Med, evaluated which countries are most friendly toward digital nomads using criteria including:
Cost of living
Safety
Average internet speed
Places to work (such as cafes, shared workspaces etc)
Thailand ranked top of the listing, with the study saying “Thailand is the best country in the world for digital nomads. The southeast Asian island is now becoming known as a digital nomad’s paradise. Those working from Thailand would benefit from sprawling landscapes with many calming activities to enjoy such as mountain trekking, swimming, and observing exotic animals in their natural habitats.” Phuket and Krabi were singled out as the best places for digital nomads.
The Top Ten City Destination list according to Club Med are:
1 Phuket – Thailand
2 Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam
3 Krabi – Thailand
4 Colombo – Sri Lanka
5 Jimbaran – Indonesia
6 Singapore – Singapore
7 Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia
8 Cancun – Mexico
9 Siem Reap – Cambodia
10 Canggu – Indonesia
Siem Reap, in 9th place globally, had a cost of living per month of $938.86, and a Wi-Fi speed of 7 Mbps according to the ranking. It was also credited for a high number of activities.
In terms of a country list, Cambodia ranked higher and was placed 4th overall:
Thailand
Sri Lanka
Singapore
Cambodia
Maldives
Indonesia
Malaysia
Brazil
India
Mexico
In the same week, Travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip also published a vastly different list in which they assessed countries with remote working visas and offered the best and worst opportunities for digital nomads. No Asian countries were ranked in the top ten.

Re: Is Cambodia a Paradise for Digital Nomads ? (Survey)
BUT, there are a lot of differing opinions on which countries best suit global remote workers. This other recent survey puts European countries at the top of the list:

The Best Destinations For Digital Nomads: A New Survey
Jon Younger
Travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip examined the latest country-level data available for countries with remote working visas to assess which ones offer the best and worst opportunities for digital nomads.
For their study, seven key categories were analyzed: internet access and speed, apartment rental costs, language difficulty, openness to digital nomads, cost and access to a work visa and length of the remote working visa.
Based on this information, InsureMyTrip found that Norway seems to be the best country for digital nomads, receiving a score of 7.88 out of a possible 10. It scored particularly highly in the categories of ‘length of remote working visa’ (10), ‘nomad acceptance’ (9.1), ‘happiness’ (9.9) and ‘internet speed’ (7.4). The other members of the “top 10” are listed below along with their score
1. Norway (7.88)
2. Mexico (7.30)
3. Germany (7.19)
4. Portugal (6.84)
5. Iceland (6.83)
6. Greece (6.45)
7. Costa Rica (6.11)
8. Jamaica (6.03)
9. Spain (6.02)
10.Bermuda (5.97)
Norway, along with Portugal and Greece, are three countries that do not limit a worker’s stay on a remote working visa, and allow an indefinite stay as long as the necessary requirements are met.
While Norway received a high ranking for ‘happiness’ (it is frequently named one of the top 10 happiest countries in the world) it was dinged for the cost of accommodations and visas compared to other countries. By contrast, Mexico, the second best country for digital nomads, scoring highly for cost of visa (10), cost of accommodation (9.75) and length of remote working visa (9.72).
Cost factors make Mexico a standout, but limited internet access is a concern. Mexico is among the worst for internet speed.

Re: Is Cambodia a Paradise for Digital Nomads ? (Survey)
number 1 IMO Brazil is really good too.
Re: Is Cambodia a Paradise for Digital Nomads ?
There isn't a long term visa that remote workers can legally and reliably get without breaking the rules, nor is there a coherent system in place for them to be able to pay their taxes.
This is why, as a remote worker with a family seeking long term stability, I had to make the decision to leave Cambodia. Hard to see how they could omit this kind of info from their article.

not many countries do but getting a long term Visa in Cambodia (albeit not legitimately) is easy enough to do and why would you want to pay taxes?Bubble T wrote: ↑Sun May 23, 2021 4:41 pm There isn't a long term visa that remote workers can legally and reliably get without breaking the rules, nor is there a coherent system in place for them to be able to pay their taxes.

pretty much disqualifies cambodia from any above-board list
.
monstra mihi bona!
Re: Is Cambodia a Paradise for Digital Nomads ?
Interesting list. I always prefer countries that make it easy to get long-term visa or let you overstay for cheap.
Brazil used to like that, also Thailand, but they changed laws. Paraguay as well was an overstay heaven.
These days l personally think Cambodia is #1 among the bunch due to easy long-term visa.
Then again if you like to to travel I suppose it doesn't matter, was always a lazy nomad myself

He told you why.
Bubs is a mature and responsible father and husband.
Why someone would be so irresponsible as to set up his family in Cambodia "albeit not legitimately" is beyond me.
All it takes is for the government to get a hair up their ass and close the agent loopholes for visas and start clamping down on taxes and possibly back taxes and you're fucked.
That's all well and good if you're only here to bang hookers and can go move to Brazil on a whim if things turn shitty here..........but it's a very different story when you have a wife and baby.
