As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. So, as of midnight last night 21/22 May, things are almost back to normal in 'Yellow Zones' - no curfews, purchase of alcohol permitted, inside-dining in restaurants & cafes. This is an interesting section of the report in this morning's Phnom Penh Post:

"Businesses including cafes, restaurants and markets can let customers sit and eat inside their venues as normal but must implement health measures by requiring all customers to scan the "Stop Covid" QR code before entering. Also, customers have to wear masks, take temperature and respect other preventive measures."

Well, yes. About eating and drinking in restaurants and cafes while wearing masks?

Er ... um ... how is that supposed to work?

It's like the airlines in the US that make a stink about wearing masks......and then 10 minutes into the flight are offering you a package of pretzels and water.

Just play the game........

...........I have to say that as a whole, I'm quite embarrassed and disappointed in humanity in general and it's handling of covid.......from the hoarding of toilet paper........to discounting science..........to the lack of strong leadership emerging in place of wilting lilies in government.......to the conspiracy theorists.......it seems that covid has really put a spotlight on our deficiencies as a human race.........

......hopefully at the conclusion of this we'll have a net positive and come out the other end as a better and more competent global society in the face of great challenges.

Sorry, but this is the "new normal" : schools to reopen "soon" (maybe).

85% of educational staff vaccinated, schools to reopen in new normal
Voun Dara | Publication date 22 May 2021 | 11:24 ICT

Eighty-five per cent of the country's 158,000 teachers and educational staff have been vaccinated against Covid-19 as schools are set to reopen in the near future with the community outbreak subsiding.

Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport spokesman Ros Soveachar told The Post on May 22 that the ministry has held meetings and worked out a strategy to resume classes after the end of the February 20 outbreak.

The strategy, he said, focused on health and safety in the education sector in compliance with preventive measures in the context of Covid-19.

For the time being, students across the country have to continue distance learning and abide by preventive health measures including the "three protections and three don’ts".

Cambodia Receives 1 Million More Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine from China
AKP Phnom Penh, May 23, 2021 --

One million more doses of Sinovac vaccine Cambodia bought from China arrived in Phnom Penh this morning.

H.E. Dr. Yuok Sambath, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health, accompanied by her colleagues welcomed the arrival of the vaccines at Phnom Penh International Airport.

Phnom Penh capital and Kandal province will remain the priorities for the newly arrived vaccines, underlined the secretary of state.

According to H.E. Dr. Yuok Sambath, more vaccines against COVID-19 will arrive in Cambodia in June.

With the newly arrived doses, Cambodia has received over 6 million doses of vaccines: 1.7 million doses of China-donated Sinopharm, 4 million doses of Sinovac bought from China, and 324,000 doses of AstraZeneca/SII (COVISHIELD) via COVAX Facility.

As of yesterday, 2,253,044 people, both military and civil, throughout Cambodia have got the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination, while over 1,514,072 million have been fully vaccinated or already obteained their second jab.

Cambodia has set to vaccinate some 10 million people or 62 percent of the total population against COVID-19 and up to the half of 2022, more than 95 percent are expected to be inoculated.
