Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion
Re: Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion
This is a very encouraging statement from the CDC about vaccinated people not having to wear masks in almost all situations.
It basically says that the overall benefits outweigh the slight risk of getting infected or of transmitting the virus to other people.
We can just hope that countries start taking up these recommendations from the respected CDC.

The new French multi-strain vaccine sounds promising. If that pans out and can go global - and enough people trust in it - I think herd immunity may well be possible. But it would still take a concerted effort by governments, carrot and stick approach perhaps.jah steu wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 6:37 am I’d always wondered whether achieving herd immunity against such a pervasive virus was actually possible. This article discusses that and what our world will be like if we can’t quite achieve it. It seems it will be ok.

Looking at the results from Israel (see attached screenshots from a recent Dr. Campbell video, data Johns Hopkins), it appears they are getting close to it, with 60% fully vaccinated using the Pfizer vaccine.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 8:31 amThe new French multi-strain vaccine sounds promising. I hope I am not too optimistic.
How this can be replicated across the world (and using other vaccines) remains to be seen.
And, with the current huge outbreaks elsewhere more variants will appear, so folks may have to receive a couple of booster shots until most of the world is on board.

This is the key issue. Unless the entire world manages to eradicate the corona virus, it will always be present somewhere.yongchi wrote: How this can be replicated across the world (and using other vaccines) remains to be seen.

Only one infectious disease has ever been completely eradicated - smallpox - and that took a huge global effort over many years.
But as the above article says, we will hopefully reach a point where we can live with the virus being around on a small scale, with the help of booster shots and sensible measures to reduce transmission.

Since the survival rate for those infected is 99.8 % you are already safe, now back to your regularly scheduled fear porn.

Tell that to the 0.2% or, put another way, 3,400,000 dead people so far.Dunderhead wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 12:45 pm Since the survival rate for those infected is 99.8 % you are already safe, now back to your regularly scheduled fear porn.

Yep, with those stats you probably won't die, you might end up going through the horrible, terrifying experience of not being able to breathe and having to be ventilated but you'll have a pretty good chance of surviving it. At least, as long as you're lucky enough to get into a hospital and they have the resources to look after you, when hundreds of people are queued up all needing the same bed though you might have a really bad day ahead of you. Also, you'd better plan on not having an accident or medical emergency during a bad outbreak for the same reason.Dunderhead wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 12:45 pm Since the survival rate for those infected is 99.8 % you are already safe, now back to your regularly scheduled fear porn.
And if you're one of the unfortunates who have symptoms that leave them unable to work or function properly for months on end - possibly forever who knows - don't worry about it, you're one of the 99.8 % in the 'safe' zone, you'll be sweet mate.

Taiwan's government has imposed its toughest restrictions so far, as the island tries to battle a spike in Covid-19 cases.
The authorities are shutting down cinemas and entertainment venues until 28 May, while limiting gatherings to five indoors and 10 outdoors.
President Tsai Ing-wen urged the public not to panic-buy basic necessities.
Taiwan - which has so far survived the pandemic almost unscathed - on Sunday reported 207 new infections.
The island of 23 million people has recorded 1,682 infections and 12 Covid-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.
Taiwan's impressive success battling the coronavirus has been largely attributed to early and strict border controls, a ban on foreign visitors and mandatory quarantine for all Taiwanese returning home.
