And now for some good news from Wildlife Alliance. Here's a great story about a baby elephant in Cambodia who lost his foot in a wildlife trap, but has been rescued by the association, thanks to prosthetic shoes which are made especially for him.

#ReadNow Snares can be a death sentence for animals who get caught in them. One such animal is Chhouk.

When Wildlife Alliance found him with his foot caught in a snare, we knew we had to act immediately. Chhouk came to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre. There, we nursed him back to health.
Sadly, Chhouk’s foot couldn’t be saved. But we didn’t give up hope. Our Director of Wildlife Rescue and Care Nick Marx knew of other elephants with prosthetics, and started making calls. Exceed Worldwide and Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics answered the call. Ever since then, they have been making shoes for Chhouk every 6 months.
Sisary Kheng, Country Director of Exceed Worldwide in Cambodia, explained the process to IFLScience. “Chhouk’s shoe has two separate parts, a soft flexible inside shoe and a hard-durable outside shoe with a tractor tire on the bottom,” said Kheng. "Chhouk also wears special socks to prevent chafing. Every six months he needs a new shoe, and every time we work together to make one. So far, Chhouk has had 17 new shoes.”

Chhouk’s journey from an injured baby in the jungle to a healthy adult is a Cinderella story! But how does he put on his shoe? Watch the process from measuring up to his first steps!

12 August was World Elephant Day !

Cambodia Calls on an End of Threats of Elephant Existence
AKP Phnom Penh, August 12, 2021--
Image
As a country engaging actively with countries around the world in conserving the world's remaining elephants, Cambodia called for an end to all activities that threaten the existence of the animal and encouraged peaceful harmonisation between humans and elephants.

H.E. Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Environment, made the call when marking the World Elephant Day on Aug. 12.

According to the secretary of state, elephant has been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

One species of the animal, Asian elephants, are living under serious threat throughout their habitat due to poaching, trapping, human-elephant conflict and domestic, he said urging all stakeholders to take part in protecting the existence of elephants.

To be part of the solution for the issue, the Ministry of Environment, in cooperation with partner organisations have developed a ten-year action plan (2020-2029) for the conservation of the Asian elephants in Cambodia which costs about US$40.5 million.

The action plan focuses on six priorities: reducing habitat loss, conserving and reconnecting corridors and herds of wild elephants, strengthening law enforcement, preventing elephant poaching, reducing human-elephant conflicts, and building public awareness.

In Cambodia, there are about 400 to 600 Asian elephants, most of which live in the Cardamom Mountains, the northern plateau of the Tonle Sap and the highlands of Mondulkiri, Rattanakiri, and the country also has over 70 domestic elephants.

Inspectors Study Elephant Dung in Mondulkiri
Image
Cambodia News, Mondulkiri: A group of wildlife researchers from Mondulkiri Provincial Department of Environment of the Ministry of Environment and the NGO WWF, recently concluded their Asian Elephant surveys with a total of 85 fresh dung samples of the mammals, collected for further genetic analysis at a Lab of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, with the hope of completion in the next 6 months.
The effort will provide the research team with evidence to understand the movements of Asian Elephants within and between protected areas in Cambodia's eastern plains and neighboring regions.

It is worth noting that the result of fecal DNA-based surveys, conducted in 2009 and 2015, showed an estimated population of more than 300 Asian Elephants in the eastern plains landscape of Mondulkiri province. It is the largest population of Asian Elephant in Cambodia.

What can you do to help ? (If you want to.)

STUDENTS RAISE MONEY TO HELP FEED SIEM REAP ELEPHANTS
Image
Cambodia News, (Siem Reap): Seven students have launched a campaign soliciting one dollar donations to raise money for the conservation of elephants in the Kulen Mountain, while also assisting Siem Reap residents whose livelihoods have been destroyed by the loss of tourism.
Samrong Hoksrun, the group leader, told the Phnom Penh Post that the campaign came about after they saw the impact that food shortages were having on the elephants in Siem Reap.
“The impact of Covid-19 has taken away almost all tourism to the point where they are having trouble paying for food for the elephants and we thought we could help,” he said.
Hoksrun is a fourth-year student at Paragon University in Phnom Penh. He said the campaign runs one month from early December until early next month. The money from the campaign will go to the elephant conservation organisations and local communities in that area.
“During this campaign, we created a Facebook page to raise awareness and attract various donors. The campaign has only been running for one week but there are already many participants. We hope there will be even more support as it continues,” he said.

The elephant conservation area in the Kulen Mountains in Bos Thom village of Sotr Nikum district’s Khnar Por commune was established in late 2019 after 13 elephants were collected from community members who ran businesses where they used them to carry tourists on sightseeing trips.
David Jaya-Piot, co-founder of the elephant conservation area at Kulen Mountains, told the Post that the 13 elephants in the conservation area eat about 200 to 300kg of food per day and he expressed his gratitude for the students’ campaign to raise donations for them.

Happy Xmas!

Newborn elephant in R’kiri brings Christmas joy to conservationists

Chenda Clais poses for a picture with the baby elephant Noel, born in Balung Town in Ratanakkiri province on December 26. CHENDA CLAIS FACEBOOK
A female domesticated elephant under the care of the Airavata Khmer Elephant Foundation gave birth to a calf on December 26 – known as “Boxing Day” in some parts of the world – in Ratanakkiri province, bringing Christmas joy to the wildlife conservation community and Ministry of Environment officials.

Chenda Clais, president of the foundation, told The Post on December 27 that one of the four domesticated elephants in the organisation’s care gave birth to the calf at 5am.

“We named this female baby elephant Noel because it was born one day after Christmas. Noel’s mother was 21 months pregnant and just gave birth to her.”

According to Chenda, the four elephants were originally from the province’s Lumphat and Bakeo districts.

Chenda said the foundation has a number of partners that help them with their elephant programme, including donors from the private sector, professional associations, civil society organisations and the environment ministry along with the ministries of Information; Tourism; Culture and Fine Arts; and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

“Our foundation has additional needs in order to bring about the successful conservation of elephants in Cambodia. We need young females to breed so that the number of domestic elephants can increase, for instance. We also urgently need more funds to carry out elephant conservation activities in our country, because elephant conservation requires a lot of money,” she said.

Environment ministry spokesman Neth Pheaktra said there were between 400-600 wild elephants living in the forests in the protected areas and around 100 more domesticated elephants living in captivity in the Kingdom, including the new calf.

Sad Noel ! Mother Snubs Baby.
Image
Cambodia News, Ratanakkiri: "E Keo", 41 years old, the female elephant in Ratanakkiri province who just gave birth to a female named "Noel" on Sunday morning, December 26th", has been a domestic elephant for the last 30 years in Cambodia, and unfortunately, according to the Airavata Elephant Foundation's Facebook page, the mother is refusing to recognize her baby.
The team are doing their best to renconcile the mother with her child, but apparently this is the mother's first-born, and she doesn't know that it belongs to her and doesn't have any motherly feelings toward her offspring.

Good news.
Numerous Baby Elephants Captured on Film in Cambodia Brings Hope
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On August 11, 2022, Neth Pheaktra, the representative of the Ministry of Environment, said that there are around 400 to 600 wild Asian elephants living in Cambodia along the Krovanh mountains, northern of Tonle Sap lake (Prey Long), and the eastern part of Mondulkiri province. There are also around 70 domestic elephants in Cambodia.

The Asian elephants in Cambodia had been listed as endangered species by the list of IUCN. Their population has been threatened by the invasion of mankind in terms of illegal hunting, deforestation, and domestication. The presence of numerous baby elephants captured on film brings hope to their survival as the population has gone down over 50% in the last 6 to 7 decades and lost 90% of their habitats.
The number of Asian elephants alive in the world is around 39,463 to 47,427 and 75% of them are in India and Sri Lanka.

Pursat celebrates thriving elephant presence in Cardamoms
Pursat province shared some encouraging news this week – the sighting of a herd of wild elephants roaming in the forest.

“I spotted 25 elephants living in the forest while I surveyed animals across Pursat,” said Provincial Governor Khoy Rida yesterday at a press conference at the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit in Phnom Penh.

“I think there are actually more elephants living in the province because they hide from us whenever we go in to count them,” Rida said.
He said that the herd of elephants are all living in the Cardamom Mountain region.

The Pursat provincial authority is committed to conserving the forest because it is a natural habitat for a number of endangered species.https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501251056/ ... cardamoms/

This is good, right? Especially since the previous estimate was only 200 wild elephants for the whole nation, but now we see that there are 300 wild elephants in Mondulkiri alone, so not including those that are found in the West of the country in Pursat.

Asian Elephants Recorded in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary
AKP Phnom Penh, June 12, 2023 --
Image
Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) have been spotted in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary, said NatureLife Cambodia Organisation, stressing that this is a new record for the last 10 years for this protected area.

According to its news release yesterday, on May 19, 2023, during their monthly patrol, rangers based in O Roveak station of Mondulkiri province recorded the footprint and leftovers of a herd of Asian elephants (four heads) in the evergreen forest of Lomphat Mondulkiri-core zone.

“We also receive the report from Taun-Kaunva villagers who saw this herd of Asian elephant sighting near their village on May 28, 2023. Our team assumes that these elephants move from the evergreen forest within the landscape and the monitoring is continuing to understand its movement,” it added.

With support from USAID-Morodok Baitang and BirdLife International, the source pointed out, NatureLife Cambodia and the Ministry of Environment are implementing the REDD+ project in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary to protect the forest, conserve wildlife and biodiversity while improving the livelihood of local communities.

The Asian elephant is classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with its population has declined by an estimated 50 percent over the past 75 years, and there are an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 Asian elephants left in the wild.
