Covid-19 VACCINE News

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

This is interesting and would explain the policy of blanket vaccination of our good capital city. Cambodia could end up being in the forefront of developing country success in dealing with Covid by vaccination.

From the Bloomberg article (linked above in Straits Times):

But the real-world examples also show that the Sinovac shot's ability to quell outbreaks requires the vast majority of people to be vaccinated, a scenario that developing countries with poor health infrastructure and limited access to shots cannot reach quickly.

In the Indonesian health worker study, and another in a Brazilian town of 45,000 people called Serrana, nearly 100 per cent of people studied were fully vaccinated, with serious illness and deaths dropping after they were inoculated.

In contrast, Chile saw a resurgent outbreak after vaccinating over a third of the population of 19 million - one of the fastest rates in the world, but not fast enough to stop the spread of the aggressive variant sweeping Latin America.

Got my first dose today. Said sinovac approved for over 60's, and why did I not come earlier LOL.
Was my 4th attempt.
A khmer girl fainted when she saw the needle.
Others were crying.

Sinovac Biotech Ltd.’s vaccine is wiping out Covid-19 among health workers in Indonesia, an encouraging sign for the dozens of developing countries reliant on the controversial Chinese shot, which performed far worse than western vaccines in clinical trials.

Indonesia tracked 128,290 health workers in capital city Jakarta from January to March and found that the vaccine protected 98% of them from death and 96% from hospitalization as soon as seven days after the second dose, Pandji Dhewantara, a Health Ministry official who oversaw the study, said in a Wednesday press conference.

Dhewantara also said that 94% of the workers had been protected against symptomatic infection -- an extraordinary result that goes beyond what was measured in the shot’s numerous clinical trials. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin earlier revealed a smaller version of the study involving 25,374 people in a Tuesday interview with Bloomberg that had the same effectiveness data for hospitalization and infection. Protection against death was 100% in the smaller group.

“We see a very, very drastic drop,” in hospitalizations and deaths among medical workers, Sadikin said. It’s not known what strain of the coronavirus Sinovac’s shot worked against in Indonesia, but the country has not flagged any major outbreaks driven by variants of concern.

Studies are coming fast and furiously. Two here somewhat related in terms of mortality rates:

Headline: One AZ COVID-19 vaccine dose gives 80% lower death risk - English data
Data from the rollout of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine shows one dose of the shot results in 80% less risk of death from the disease, Public Health England said on Monday.

It also said protection against death from the Pfizer-BioNTech (PFE.N), vaccine rises from approximately 80% after one dose to 97% after two doses in its new analysis.

PHE said the study was the first on protection against mortality from the AstraZeneca vaccine based on data from a real world setting.

Headline: Delaying second COVID-19 vaccine doses can help reduce deaths - study
"The results suggest that under specific conditions a decrease in cumulative mortality, infections, and hospital admissions can be achieved when the second vaccine dose is delayed," wrote the researchers, led by the Thomas C Kingsley of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The specific conditions include having a vaccine with a one dose efficacy of at least 80% and having daily immunisation rates of between 0.1% and 0.3% of a population - but if they are met, a delayed second-dose strategy could prevent between 26 and 47 deaths per 100,000 people compared to the usual schedule.

Here are initial results of a separate study on mix and match vaccines, in the same link ^^^ above:
Separately, an Oxford University-led study on giving shots from different manufacturers for the two doses reported its first findings - on the frequency of common post-vaccination symptoms such as sore arm, chills or fatigue.

It found that people vaccinated with a shot of Pfizer's vaccine followed by a dose of AstraZeneca's, or vice versa, were more likely to report mild or moderate symptoms such as headaches or chills than if they received two of the same type.

Pfizer and AstraZeneca were the first vaccines available in Britain to be trialled in the "mix-and-match" study. Shots by Novavax and Moderna have since been added to the research. read more

Key data on immune responses generated by the different combinations of mixed or regular dose schedules is expected to be reported in the coming months, according to Matthew Snape, the Oxford University professor leading the trial.

Eight people from the New York Yankees organization tested positive, despite having been vaccinated.

That's quite a lot in one group and these were all fully vaccinated.

Gleyber Torres, the Yankees’ two-time All-Star shortstop, became the eighth person involved with the Yankees organization to test positive for the coronavirus this week, the team announced on Thursday. But what has caught the attention of many outside of the baseball world is that Torres, three coaches and four support staff members had all been fully vaccinated.

The Yankees have called all eight instances “breakthrough positives.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a breakthrough case occurs when a fully vaccinated person contracts the virus. It said a small number of such cases would be expected despite the effectiveness of vaccines, because none of the vaccines are capable of preventing illness in 100 percent of cases.

Experts warn vaccines are 'almost certainly less effective' at reducing transmission of Indian variant
Adding to concerns, Dr Harnden today revealed that Britain's vaccine rollout - hailed as the key to preventing another wave - may not stop the virus infecting the vulnerable.

He said the jab is not only 'less effective against mild disease', it is 'almost certainly less effective against transmission' - partly because immunisation only begins three weeks after the vaccine is given.
It seems that this is just going to go on and on and on... When will it ever end?

Only one of them is symptomatic. That's what vaccines do, the goal is not just to prevent transmission but to reduce serious consequences of infection.

Well, my guess is that it will not end for several years. Covid variants will ensure that vaccine makers will have to tweak annually just as they do for seasonal flu. But while the flu annual flu vaccine is promoted more for over 60s (and optional), I envisage the annual covid vaccine will be recommended for all, ages. I doubt the wuhan virus will ever be eradicated altho eventually herd immunity will kick in.

Vaccins are only part of the solution. Meanwhile I support all local initiatives to fight Covid.
