Tokyo Olympics 2020
Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
Yes, ludicrous is right. Who gives a shit about the athletes, what about the Japanese? Athletes, trainers, and who knows from over 200 countries exposing the Japanese people to a potential super pandemic. Will spectators be allowed into the country? That would cause a real clusterf**k. And now Japan has identified that their hospitals, doctors, and nurses are overfilled and overworked and increasing that situation with foreign visitors would break the country. The only ones hoping to proceed are the corporations and government concerned about loosing money.
Yes, just end it now.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
It’s a Japanese thing.
This is a society that jumped from feudal to industrialized in one generation, and then from ashes of the third world to the first world in one generation. Lots of feudal traditions kept and still cherished.
The previous prime minister scolded Japanese women for not marrying and not having tons of kids. He told them they should just do their duty. And then went on to mention that even during World War 2, Japanese women had lots of kids.
Sorry to stir the pot.
The Olympics are a unifying force of the world.
Yes, there are tons of challenges.
But athletes all over the world have been waiting for this chance. Delay it some more, and they may be too old. Delay it some more, and sponsors may dry up as well.
Why do some CEO members have to paint everything as a conspiracy by giant corporations?

Tokyo Olympics will be closed to fans from abroad, hints Games organiser

The new president of the Tokyo Olympic organising committee has hinted that foreign fans will not be allowed at this summer’s Games amid reports in the Japanese press that a decision had already been made to exclude them.
“If the situation is tough and it would make the [Japanese] consumers concerned, that is a situation we need to avoid from happening,” the committee president, Seiko Hashimoto, told reporters after online talks with the International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach.
The Japanese newspaper Mainichi stated on Wednesday before the meeting with Bach that officials had already made up their minds ahead of a final announcement on the foreign fans situation expected by the end of the month. The press report cited only unnamed sources “involved in the discussions”.
Citing an anonymous government official, Mainichi reported: “In the current situation it is impossible to bring in foreign spectators.”

I don't see how they could go ahead at all once it is all said and done with the current timeframe. We're slowly heading to an inevitable bizarro-world event of no people or closure with their denials of reality. Very insane.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 7:57 pm Tokyo Olympics will be closed to fans from abroad, hints Games organiser

Tokyo Olympics: poll shows 60% of Japanese people want Games cancelled
Justin McCurry in Tokyo and agencies
Last modified on Mon 10 May 2021 08.05 BST
Preparations for the Tokyo Olympics have suffered another setback after a poll found that nearly 60% of people in Japan want them to be cancelled, less than three months before the Games are due to open.
Japan has extended a state of emergency in Tokyo and several other regions until the end of May as it struggles to contain a surge in Covid-19 cases fuelled by new, more contagious variants, with medical staff warning that health services in some areas are on the verge of collapse.
The Olympics, which were delayed by a year due to the pandemic, are set to open on 23 July, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and organisers insisting that measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of athletes and other visitors, as well as a nervous Japanese public.
The survey, conducted between 7 and 9 May by the conservative Yomiuri Shimbun, showed 59% wanted the Games cancelled as opposed to 39% who said they should be held. “Postponement” – an option ruled out by the IOC – was not offered as a choice.
Of those who said the Olympics should go ahead, 23% said they should take place without spectators. Foreign spectators have been banned but a final decision on domestic attendance will be made in June.

Surge in Covid-19 cases in Tokyo, less than a month out from Olympics
Fears of a possible fifth wave as Tokyo reported 317 infections on Monday and the ninth week-on-week rise
Justin McCurry in Tokyo
Tue 29 Jun 2021 05.09 BST
A rise in daily cases of the coronavirus in Tokyo has triggered fears of a possible fifth wave of infections, less than a month before the city is due to host the Olympics.
Tokyo reported 317 infections on Monday – an increase of 81 from the same day last week and the ninth week-on-week rise in a row.
The rise in cases, coupled with evidence that the more transmissible Delta variant is spreading, raises the likelihood that Tokyo will still be subject to emergency measures in some form when the Olympics open on 23 July.
Yasutoshi Nishimura, the minister overseeing Japan’s pandemic response, this week said the government would “not hesitate” to call a new state of emergency if necessary.
“The number of new infections in the capital and other areas in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area is clearly trending upward,” he said in an interview with the public broadcaster NHK.
The perils of holding an event on the scale of the Olympics during a pandemic were underlined this month when two members of the Ugandan team tested positive for Covid-19 – the second while staying in the town hosting the hosting their training camp. Both had the delta variant of virus, local media reported.
John Coates, a senior member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), sparked anger in Japan last month when he said the Olympics would go ahead even if Tokyo was under a state of emergency.
“All the measures we are undertaking will ensure a safe Games regardless of whether there is a state of emergency or not,” Coates, an IOC vice-president who is in charge of preparations, said after a virtual meeting with organisers.

Spectators banned from most Olympic events as Covid emergency declared
Tokyo’s fourth state of emergency will begin on Monday

For 125 years they have been an integral part of the world’s largest sports event, inspiring athletes to be faster, higher, stronger. But, for the first time in history, spectators have been barred from most Olympic events after a fourth state of emergency was declared in Tokyo.
Organisers had been planning to allow up to 10,000 spectators at venues, despite fears it could lead to the Olympics becoming a super-spreader event. However on Thursday they were forced to perform a U-turn after a spike in cases of the Delta variant.
The move is the latest blow to the troubled Games, delayed by a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic and plagued by a series of setbacks, including massive budget overruns.
Japan’s prime minister, Yoshihide Suga, said the decision had been taken after Tokyo reported 920 new coronavirus infections, the highest number since May, and over fears the virus could spread as people arrived home for the summer holidays. However he promised the Olympics, which will start on 23 July, would show resilience in the face of adversity.
“It will be an unusual way of staging the event amid a state of emergency,” Suga admitted. “But I want to show from Tokyo that the human race can overcome great difficulty through hard work and wisdom.”
More than half of the 43 Olympic and Paralympic venues, including the 68,000-capacity National Stadium that is set to host the opening ceremony on 23 July, have barred spectators.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
I intend to spit and holler that the Olympics has lost its soul
that it is a prostitution and a betrayal of its original aim
that everybody who watches it is a dupe
that the poor sucker participants have been hijacked
all now mere pawns of Coca Cola Inc et al
I will sneer thru the opening ceremony
refuse to give it more than a glance
...and then very quickly get totally sucked in.
