ANGKOR WAT IS A GHOST TOWN

Post by MrB »

Not seen it was lost to the jungle has Angkor Wat been so empty. I was there all day & saw only a handful of locals, if you have not been then go as is just amazing to have it all to yourself.

Do the crowds really get like the video implies, or are we just seeing a couple buses of people newly dropped off? I went to Angkor Wat three years ago and it wasn't anything close to that busy.

I believe those are pictures of the ridiculously big crowds that used to go for sunrise. I've been there many times and never seen that many people either. The only time I went for sunrise was in 2000 and there were maybe a dozen people there.

Pctures are from 2016 and 2019, 2 out of the 3 pictures (in the video) are from the sunrise.
In 2019 from Q1-Q3 (Q4 was reset to zero) roughly 1,3 million people visited Siem Reap.
In 2018 the total visitors (for the whole of Cambodia) was 6,201,077.
In 2000 the total visitors (for the whole of Cambodia) was 466,365.

Would love to go right about now and see it deserted and calm. But...
