Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Siam Bioscience confident of delivering vaccine jabs on time
THAILAND: Siam Bioscience Co, the local biotechnology firm contracted to manufacture the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in Thailand, said it is confident that it will be able to deliver the vaccines on time once they have passed the required checks.

The company is in the process of sending samples of the vaccines it produced to several laboratories in Europe and the United States for quality inspection.

Once the samples are approved by the labs, they will be sent to AstraZeneca, which will then register the vaccine with the Thai Food and Drug Administration, so it can be mass-produced and used domestically, the company said.

After getting FDA’s approval, Siam Bioscience will ramp up the production of the vaccines.

Before the doses are delivered to the government in July as planned, they will be sent to AstraZeneca, who will carry out final quality and safety inspections, it said.

Siam Bioscience said its plant is capable of producing vaccines at almost the same rate as other manufacturers in Australia and South Korea, as they use the same technology from AstraZeneca.

Deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul earlier said that between 6-10 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be ready for use in June.

Nualphan Lamsam, corporate communication director of Siam Bioscience, said the company has been working closely with AstraZeneca to ensure both the quality and safety of the product.

“All parties concerned are working against time to produce the vaccine as fast as possible and make it an alternative to help save lives,” she said.

AstraZeneca (Thailand) Co president James Teak said the company is committed to ensuring equal and timely access to the COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic.

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reported to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration on Friday that the company has improved the vaccine’s efficacy against the Brazilian and South African strains of the coronavirus.

........Deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul earlier said that between 6-10 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be ready for use in June.

so 3-5 million people will get their 2 doses out of 65 million>
not close to 70% needed for herd immunity

Amazing Thailand sale

Finally, a story with useful information on the Thai produced AZ. Good on the Bangkok Post or Phuket News, whichever did the work. At least Siam Bio is ACTUALLY much further ahead in vaccine production than even I could imagine. In fact, I'm sure many thought this was going to be a disaster.

Interestingly enough:
Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reported to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration on Friday that the company has improved the vaccine’s efficacy against the Brazilian and South African strains of the coronavirus.
From what I could dig up on news sites, Anut-case is not exactly correct. AZ's most recent real world data, in fact, show its vaccine is fairly effective against the variants, more so than they were expecting.

Still, is it June or July? We await further contradictory info.

So according to this report by the end of the year Thailand would have been delivered 73mil vaccines (71m from AZ and 2m from CCP) that's enough for 36mil people.

After this 6-10m AZ vaccines are ready in June, AZ will roll out 10m vaccines per month from July till the end of the year. Now, producing 10m jabs a month, this is hard to believe.

AstraZeneca will remain Thailand’s primary vaccine, insists Health Minister
Maya TaylorPublished 2 days ago on Friday, April 16, 2021By Maya Taylor

The Health Minister insists the AstraZeneca vaccine will remain Thailand’s primary Covid-19 jab, despite concerns over rare side-effects. Some countries have suspended its use, while Denmark is the first country in Europe to abandon it completely. However, Anutin Charnvirakul says it’s up to each country to make their own decisions and Thailand is pressing ahead with the jab.

“There are many factors for each country whether to use or not use the vaccine. But we have expertise to closely monitor the vaccine information. We base decisions on scientific knowledge, not news. If something happens, we will let the public know. Please do not worry about it.”

Thailand is ordering vaccines from a limited number of manufacturers, primarily AstraZeneca and China’s Sinovac Biotech. According to a Bangkok Post report, the Kingdom is purchasing 71 million doses of the AstraZeneca jab and 2 million doses of CoronaVac, the vaccine from Sinovac. The rollout is expected to begin in June, with health officials aiming to inoculate 35 million people (half the population) by the end of the year.

However, the challenge will be gaining the public’s trust, as countries around the world express concerns about the very rare risk of blood clots that appears to be associated with adenovirus vector vaccines, such as AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. The single-dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson is the third vaccine to be approved for emergency use in Thailand, but the US has just suspended its use following a number of blood clot incidents similar to the AstraZeneca cases.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation and the European Medicines Agency insist the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh the risks of very rare blood clots. In the UK, the vaccine has been widely administered as the country sets its sights on achieving herd immunity, with Anutin pointing out that infections there have dropped considerably.

Ouch what a bummer. That's one of the reasons why I think the tourist recovery will take longer than the authorities anticipate, people may look at these continuing periodic shutdowns and decide not to risk it. Okay the bars are shut but when you can't use the swimming pool or the beach maybe closed there's not too much left for a nice outdoor seaside holiday.
