Here is the latest Chinese news coverage of the Chinese funded stadium at the Morodok Techo National Sports Complex. Everything is on schedule, and Cambodian and Chinese workers are working together like brothers.

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Robed in a high-vis vest and crowned with a white hard-hat, Chea Samnang, a 25-year-old construction worker, is proud of working with a Chinese developer to build a China-aided main stadium here.

Standing on the terrace of the ongoing-construction stadium with the sun beaming down on him on Thursday, Samnang, a local man of medium height and build with dark skin, said he has worked as an electrician and plumber for the project since August 2018.

"I'm in charge of connecting water and electricity and installing air-conditioners," he told Xinhua. "I'm happy and proud of working with the Chinese company to construct this huge stadium."

"The stadium is very meaningful for the Cambodia-China relations and is vital to further develop our sports sector," he added.

The stadium has been developing by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) under the Chinese aid of 1.1 billion Chinese yuan (about 160 million U.S. dollars).

Workers are both Chinese and Cambodians. They worked actively during the Spring Festival season although the weather was typically scorching in the country at this time of the year.

Giant cranes were used to deliver construction materials to upper floors, as some workers were cutting steel, others assembling steel structures, and the others plastering and smoothing concrete walls with cement.

Worker Hun Sok Leoun said with the project, he could learn new experience and get a better pay, 16 U.S. dollars per day.

"As a Cambodian, I'm very proud of working with this project because in our history, there has never had such a huge stadium in Cambodia," the 35-year-old father of a daughter, told Xinhua. "It's the pride of Cambodia because, in our country, this stadium is the biggest of all."

ON TRACK FOR COMPLETION

Wang Qunqing, senior engineer and technical director of the project, said work on the 60,000-seat stadium began in August 2017 and the project will be completed on schedule, by December this year.

The 5-storey stadium covers a 16-hectare parcel in the 85-hectare Morodok Techo National Sports Complex, which is located about 18 km north of central Phnom Penh.

The stadium will serve as the main venue for tournaments when Cambodia hosts the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2023.

According to the master plan, the 39.9-meter-tall stadium will be built in the shape of a sailing ship in which its both prows are 99 meters tall, and it will be encircled by an ancient Angkor-style moat.

Thong Khon, president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, said the saili ng ship symbolizes a long-standing traditional friendship between Cambodia and China because Chinese people used to travel by sailing ship to Cambodia in ancient times.

UPDATE
Cambodia: National stadium nearing completion
11.05.2020 19:08 source: StadiumDB.com

Cambodia: National stadium nearing completion Now 80% complete, the new national stadium in Phnom Penh should be delivered along its initial schedule, regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's going to be one of Asia's largest stadia.
Image
Already over 3 years – that's how long the largest sports project of Cambodia has been under construction. Launched in April of 2017, the new national stadium has reached 80% in late April, as confirmed by Vat Chamroeun, secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia. This means a third of the project was completed within a year, as the 50% mark was reached back in May of 2019.
Image
According to the schedule, the stadium should be handed over by December 31 of this year. The deadline has been recently confirmed as safe, despite special safety protocols introduced because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Recent months have seen all of the main concrete works delivered, including both the prefabricated rows of seating and monolithic pylons. Now bulk of ongoing works is focused on the roof. Once it's self-supporting, installation of 75,000 seats will be able to begin.

By far the most iconic element of the stadium are its two end pylons, each rising 99 meters from the ground. As is common in road bridges these days, both pylons support the roof through steel cable connections. The canopy is expected to hover roughly 40 meters above field level. The pylons are supposedly inspired to resemble prows of a boat, an easy association with Cambodian sailing and fishing traditions.
Image
The Phnom Penh project is taking quite some time, but it's also not bound by tight deadlines. Roughly 600 people are employed on site, most of them Chinese. As you probably know by now, it's one more example of China's 'stadium diplomacy', a supposed proof of friendship between Cambodia and China. It's designed, built and financed entirely by China, to the tune of CNY 1.1 billion (currently $155m).

Aside from the main stadium able to hold the Olympics (and planned as main venue for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games), the 85-hectare complex will also offer a 15,000-seat indoor arena and covered natatorium.

Moradok Techo National Stadium is 90% completed
Image
Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: The central construction of the Moradok Techo National Stadium, which is the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, has achieved about 90% of its construction achievements.

Secretary-General of the National Organizing Committee for the 32nd SEA Games 2023 (CAMSOC), Mr. Vath Chamroeun, stated that although the Kovid-19 crisis has affected the world, it will not significantly affect the construction of the second phase of the National Stadium. In fact, so far, the construction has run smoothly and achieved 90%.
The project is expected to be completed by March 2021. It will be able to accomodate about 60,000 spectators.

It's a nice addition to the new CPP headquarters. The perfect venue for brainwashing Trump-like rallies.

Cambodia looking increasingly like North Korea with its grandiose projects, failing economy, and heavy reliance on China. Oh yea, and authoritarian regime. I forgot that one.

But even still if there are sidewalks/footpaths Chinese still walk three abreast on the road.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Cambodia: National stadium delayed, conflicting info
23.09.2020 20:36 source: StadiumDB.com

Cambodia: National stadium delayed, conflicting info Back in May authorities assured there is no COVID-19-caused delay. Now we're talking of 3-4 months more work needed to complete Cambodia's most impressive stadium. And we're still not sure how many people it will hold.

Official profile of Morodok Techo National Stadium (in western Phnom Penh) released a video update on the project earlier today. The update reveals that all temporary roof supports have been removed, the cable roof is now hovering lightly 40 meters above the bottom of the stadium.

In total, the stadium looks really well, especially with the 99-meter pylons fully revealed and the 3-tier seating bowl now complete. No obstructed views, surely, however there will be some seats left out in the rain as the roof will not cover all spectators.

The only problem with the video is that the information attached suggests progress rate of 80%. That's exactly the rate given back in May by the Cambodian Olympic Committee. And it's been 4 months, after all. Obviously, there has been significant progress since then, as proven by the first ever view of the stadium without interim supports.

But it's now also clear that the project has suffered from delays caused by COVID-19, contrary to early optimism from May. The deadline of December 31 will not be met. According to the Cambodian Olympic Committee chairman Vath Chamroeun, delivery has been switched to March or April of 2021.

The slip has been caused by the pandemic, which has impacted international mobility. And we should remember that many of the workers, especially the management and specialists, are Chinese. The project worth 1.1 billion yuan (today $162m) is, after all, financed by China as part of the country's stadium diplomacy scheme (or economic colonisation, if you prefer).

The deadline being pushed means very little to the project itself. After all, it's mainly being built with hosting mega events in mind, which are now the least of anyone's concern. The first contracted tournament is the 2023 SEA Games.

The stadium's capacity is a different issue altogether. You may recall that upon its presentation in 2015, the venue was advertised as a 60,000-seater both in Cambodia and in China. However, since last year Khmer Times has been quoting official statements, suggesting the size is actually 75,000.

This persisted until mid-2020 and now we're back to 60,000. One article even suggests it's 55,000. So personally we're confused and will try to establish the most credible version but officially we're reverting back to the original 60,000, which is also the number circulating in Chinese media.

UPDATE
Cambodia NOC chief claims new stadium will be completed by end of May
By Liam Morgan Thursday, 8 April 2021

A new stadium being built in Phnom Penh for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games is 95 per cent complete, according to the secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC).

Vath Chamroeun, who also acts as secretary general of the Organising Committee for the Games in Cambodia, said construction work could be completed at the Morodok Techo National Stadium by the end of May.

The complex at the national stadium, expected to have a capacity of 60,000, is also set to include an aquatic centre, an indoor sports centre, a training field and a training hall.

The venue is due to host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Southeast Asian Games when the multi-sport event is held in Cambodia for the first time.
