Pfizer vaccine has 91% efficacy for up to six months, trial shows

Some good news...

Findings based on two doses three weeks apart are first to show shot remains effective for many months

The coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech protects against symptomatic Covid for up to six months, an updated analysis of clinical trial data has found.

In a statement released on Thursday, the companies reported efficacy of 91.3% against any symptoms of the disease in participants assessed up to six months after their second shot. The level of protection is only marginally lower than the 95% achieved soon after vaccination.

The findings are the first to demonstrate that the vaccine remains effective for many months, an outcome that doctors and scientists had desperately hoped for because it suggests that people being vaccinated now should be protected at least until the autumn when boosters may be ready.

Taiwan accused China of trying to bribe Paraguay with COVID-19 vaccines to make it stop recognizing Taiwan

Taiwan has accused Beijing of trying to bribe Paraguay with COVID-19 vaccines to officially recognize Taiwan as part of China. Paraguay is one of only 15 nations that still recognize Taiwan as independent, and it is in dire need of vaccines. China has long insisted that Taiwan is part of China, though Taiwan has operated as its own country for decades.

Paraguay is struggling with a new wave of infections, and the government faces widespread protests over its pandemic response.

On Wednesday, Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s foreign minister, told Agence France-Presse that China had sought to use the turmoil to pressure Paraguay into swearing publicly that Taiwan was part of China. “This is a period of time when we see Chinese ‘vaccine diplomacy’ has been flexing its muscles in many parts of world, especially in central and south America,” Wu told the agency. “The Chinese government was very active in saying … if the Paraguay government is willing to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan, they will be able to get quite a few million vaccine doses from China.”

Wu said that the offer from Beijing had put President Mario Abdo Benítez’s government in a tough spot, with Paraguay’s main political opposition “very willing to link up with China.” Last month, China denied trying to win Paraguay’s support with vaccines after Paraguay said it had been approached by brokers claiming they could provide Chinese vaccines if the South American country cut ties with Taiwan.

Wu went on to say Wednesday that the Taiwanese government had reached out to Japan, the US, and India to ask for vaccines in an attempt to bat away Beijing’s advances, Channel News Asia reported. “India fortunately has been able to provide some Covaxin vaccines to Paraguay,” Wu said. Covaxin is an Indian-made vaccine produced by Bharat Biotech and the Indian government. India sent 100,000 doses to Paraguay on March 26, with 100,000 more in the pipeline, Wu said, per Channel News Asia.

China has offered its vaccine to dozens of poorer nations in what critics say is an attempt to usurp the success of vaccines from Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Moderna that were made by companies in the West. Last month, China’s foreign ministry said it was providing 69 countries with free vaccines and was selling vaccines to 28 nations.

NHS to cancel vaccinations for under-30s after new AstraZeneca advice
Patients will be told to discuss any concerns over the AstraZeneca vaccine with their GP

Health Correspondent

NHS England is to cancel all booked first dose Coronavirus vaccinations for adults under 30 from tomorrow after the change in advice on the AstraZeneca vaccine.

From tomorrow anyone aged between 18 and 29 who was scheduled to have the AstraZeneca vaccine will have their appointment cancelled and they will be told to book with their GP to discuss their preference.

It is thought the cancellations will affect several thousand people who were booked for a vaccine including younger health and social care workers, unpaid carers and people living with relatives who have a compromised immune system.

On Wednesday, concerns about the possible link between the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab and rare blood clots triggered a change in advice from the government’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation which said anyone under 30 should be offered an alternative vaccine as a precaution.

The change was made to reflect the reduced risk to those under 30 from Coronavirus. Overall the UK regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said the risk from the virus far outweighed the risk from the vaccine for most patients. It comes after the MHRA identified 79 cases of rare blood clots in patients who had the vaccine, including 19 deaths.

The JCVI said it was not recommending any vaccinations be stopped - but NHS England’s decision to cancel all AstraZeneca vaccines will effectively do just that until those affected can re-book their appointments.

Advice which is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard, given that face-to-face appointments are nigh on impossible with your GP, and getting one to pick up a phone is as tricky as trying to lasso an eel with an elastic band.

Headline: Exclusive: French health body to say mRNA vaccine should be used as second dose after AstraZeneca
PARIS (Reuters) - France’s top health body will on Friday say that recipients of a first dose of AstraZeneca’s traditional COVID-19 vaccine who are under 55 should get a second shot with a new-style messenger-RNA vaccine, two sources aware of the plans said on Thursday.
Germany was the first European country to recommend that people under 60 who have had a first AstraZeneca shot should receive a different product for their second dose.

Some experts say that, because all the vaccines target the same outer “spike” protein of the virus, they could be complementary. But there is no evidence that this approach will be as effective.

NHS to cancel vaccinations for under-30s after new AstraZeneca advice
Australia takes it one step further..

Australia Halts AstraZeneca Vaccine For Under 50s Over Blood Clot Concerns

In a further setback for Australia's already halting coronavirus vaccine rollout, officials said the AstraZeneca shot should no longer be given to people under the age of 50, unless they had already received a first dose without any ill effects.

Australian officials justified the cutoff age of 50 for giving the vaccine by saying younger people were less at risk of suffering severe complications from Covid-19.

So fed up with it all. The government and medical experts could have chosen to make it an education moment .... putting the risk in perspective ...

Relating to chance of getting clot, chance of dying from it if you get one, the chance even if you don’t get the vaccine, the chance if you fly, the chance if you take the contraceptive pill, the risks of similarly fatal results from other medications etc etc

Instead they just messed it all up and I am angry that this is going to prolong the pain that is living in this covid-19 world.

I suppose as far as pandemics go, we could have been in a worse situation in terms of effects of covid on general population ... if we were due a pandemic, as the experts predicted, better this than some scenarios.

I AM STILL OVER IT THOUGH
Despite what angsta states, it’s clear from reading through his posts that angsta supports the free FreePalestine movement.

Lucky you!! My local 3-centre practice partnership is woeful. Mind you, they were pretty poor before the whole COVID thing. Can't praise the vaccination centres highly enough though.
