Cambodia Trains Covid-19 Dog Sniffers
Cambodia trains mine-clearing dogs to sniff out Covid-19

- CMAC
PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) has been training 10 dogs with the skills necessary to sniff for and track down people positive with Covid-19.
CMAC director-general Heng Ratana told The Post on March 25 that in addition to the 10 dogs, CMAC has also prepared equipment for training the dogs in soft and hard skills.
He said preparations were in place, pending further discussion with the Ministry of Health’s specialist officials on how to train the dogs with the Covid-19 sniffing skills.
Ratana said the 10 dogs were divided into two teams of five. They are dogs that have been undergoing basic training.
Other dogs that have already received higher-level training in mine sniffing would not be used in Covid-19 tracking.
“There’s no challenge in training the dogs because CMAC’s experts are highly confident. So, there’s nothing that we can’t do. Other countries have already used dogs, such as Germany and Russia, among others, ” he said.
Ratana inspected the dogs on March 24 at CMAC’s Technical Institute of Mine Action in Kampong Chhnang province to get ready for medical scientists and CMAC’s dogs expert team to work together to find all possible methods to fight Covid-19.

Re: Cambodia Trains Covid-19 Dog Sniffers
How do they know the difference between covid and other similar coronaviruses? How can they tell somey that was recently vaccinated from a positive? Sounds a bit too amazing to be true.

Presumably if the dog marked on you the next step would be an actual covid test.

Last year they were trying this in Finland and the conclusion was that there was not enough evidence to support the canines' ability to detect the virus. I remember reading some other countries trying it too with similar results.

Yeah, I can't wait to get approached by a sniffer dog who doesn't just like the smell of landmines and COVID 19 but also likes the smell of the burger I just ate. I'm reluctant to go anywhere nowadays in case I get caught up in a roundup of the last 2000 people at the minimart.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Re: Cambodia Trains Covid-19 Dog Sniffers
They were using those big African rats to sniff out land mines et al. I presume they were better at it or more cost effective as opposed to dogs..
I wonder whether they can be trained to detect the Wuhan virus?

Covid-sniffer dogs are working in the US:
NASCAR’s sniffer dogs can detect COVID-19 with up to 98% accuracy
By Hannah Sparks
March 18, 2021 | 3:20pm | Updated
Extrasensory dogs are being trained to sniff out COVID-19 in human sweat with accuracy that compares closely to traditional tests.
International researchers have claimed that well-trained dogs have the ability to correctly identify coronavirus patients at reported rates of 94% to 98%, according to some studies. If proven effective, they say these dogs could be an asset to public health officials, who could place the skilled sniffers in high-traffic hubs including airports, train terminals and public events.
Among the first to launch their canine-based coronavirus testing program: NASCAR. Race officials said Wednesday that they had hired the 360 K9 Group, based in Alabama and Florida, to monitor for infected guests during their most recent event — last Sunday’s Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway — and will continue the effort on a “trial basis” for Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500.

Re: Cambodia Trains Covid-19 Dog Sniffers
And in return, expose the dogs to the covid virus since the presence of an infection is required for positive detection. Scandalous.
