Information on Coronavirus / COVID-19 in Cambodia (Latest Updates December 2021)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Sihanoukville’s Jin Bei Casino allowed to reopen as Cambodian COVID outbreak spreads
Tuesday 16 March 2021 at 05:51

The governor of Preah Sihanouk, Kuoch Chamroeun, has granted permission for three hotspots in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, including Jin Bei Casino and Hotel, to resume normal operations.

All three branches of Jin Bei Hotel as well as Jin Bei Casino and Hotel were closed down in late February after two positive cases of COVID-19 among Chinese guests were detected.

Inside Asian Gaming reported at the time that Jin Bei Casino and Hotel had been surrounded by police and locked down, with staff and players essentially trapped inside. A total of 32 locations across the city were subsequently designated as hotspots and another 19 as quarantine facilities, however Chamroeun lifted some of those on Sunday, with Jin Bei among them, according to a report by The Khmer Times.

There is, however, increasing concern over an outbreak of COVID-19 that continues to rapidly spread across the country. Cambodian Prime Minister HE on Monday issued a ban on all public gatherings, including weddings and religious rituals, after two men separately defied isolation orders and attended weddings in Kampot and Takeo. Both subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.

Having initially kept the global pandemic largely at bay, Cambodia is now in the midst of its first major outbreak with around 900 cases linked to the cluster and almost 60 new cases reported up to 9pm Monday night. The outbreak is said to have started when four Chinese nationals bribed their way out of a quarantine hotel on 20 February and visited a series of nightclubs. Two of those Chinese nationals later tested positive for COVID-19.

Phnom Penh integrated resort NagaWorld remains closed after suspending operations earlier this month when 11 staff members tested positive to COVID-19 as part of a mass testing regime implemented by the company.

Complete horseshit. Why would incoming/outgoing parcels be stopped to Cambodia? India has like 20k new cases per day. Yes, totally legit source...Image

My correspondent forwarded to me the official announcement from the Indian Post Office. Its amazing how easily you dismiss anything you see online yet you are willing to believe the constant lies told to you by the government. Why would they be stopped? For the same reason its not possible to send stuff to Vietnam - because the government has completely lost its mind.

Why not share the official announcement if you have it?

Ah, well if it's only India maybe. I also totally agree that governments worldwide have lost their minds, but it's still an odd thing to do. I thought you mean the Cambodian post office would just close and not take any incoming packages.

Three days back (March 13) I asked a friend in India to check whether a credit card could be send by post from India to Cambodia.

This is his reply after inquiring at the local post office:

Credit card can be send by post, no problem, but no postal service to Cambodia right now, Thailand would be possible.

But three hotels/casinos in Sihanoukville have reopened, so there's hope! :P

HE says "stay at home":
PM urges against travel to stave off transmissions as Covid cases soar

Mom Kunthear | Publication date 16 March 2021 | 22:22 ICT

Prime Minister HE urged the public to refrain from non-essential travel, or wear a mask at all times otherwise, to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus which he said is circulating largely undetected.

The appeal comes as the Ministry of Health set a new one-day record for Covid-19 infections with 105 confirmed cases on March 16, all of which were linked to the February 20 community outbreak.
