News publisher attacked by gang
The publisher of Anachak Khmer News suffered serious injuries after he was beaten by a gang on Sunday night in Siem Reap’s Svay Loeu district.
Colonel Sun Eng, Svay Loeu deputy police chief, said yesterday that the victim was treated at Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital and then transferred to a private hospital.
He said that police have not yet identified the perpetrators but the investigation is ongoing.
Col Eng said the motivation for the beating was not clear.
Pran Sean, publisher of the Anachak Khmer News, said yesterday on his Facebook page that the incident happened late on Sunday night when four perpetrators attacked him then escaped. Two of the men wielded a 1.50 cm long stick.
He said that he had left Preah Vihear province with another passenger and became sleepy as he passed through Svay Loeu district. He decided to stop the car and tied a hammock to sleep near the road in front of Beng Mealea temple when a gang suddenly attacked and hit him with the stick more than 10 times.
“The attack on me by the perpetrator could be a murderous attempt because if I did not have a chance to run into the car, they definitely would have beat me to death,” Sean said.
According to Sean’s Facebook account, there was an article posted that forest crime has resurfaced, but Siem Reap officials seem unconcerned.
He previously posted that he observed bulldozers every night transporting dozens of cut wood along the road yet he never saw any police officers or local authorities crack down on them.
