CIA school called out over fees

Parents of CIA First International School are conducting an online protest against the administration of the school for not adhering to the agreement of a 20 to 25 percent discount on the school’s tuition fee after parents’ protests in front of the school led to an agreement in June last year.

On the “CIA First Parents” Facebook page on March 1, they appealed to the Ministry of Education (MoEYS).

“Online learning is not effective for pupils,” the post said, adding that pupils also can’t study alone online so they need a caretaker or guardian to help out causing parents to lose the opportunity to go to work or do other business.

The post expressed parents’ frustration that schools have saved money on utilities and other things, so their cost should not remain the same.

“We hope [the MoEYS] would take appropriate and timely measures to avoid any potential confrontation,” the online post concluded.

Pa Chanroeun, one of the parents, told Khmer Times that they have been demanding the school uphold what was agreed on for a long time; however, they were just ignored.

According to him, when COVID-19 broke out in April last year, parents requested the school’s administration to reduce the fee by 50 percent. They made a total of four physical protests in front of the school just to be heard until, with the help of the MoEYS, the school agreed to provide a 25 percent reduction for kindergarteners and 20 percent for grade-level students.

Chanroeun said that the deal was closed in June last year and that the agreement states that the discount is valid while COVID-19 is ongoing or when classes become normal but the school did not honour it.

Kann Kunthy, with three children at CIA First International, expressed that he would like to see school management honour the existing agreement made under the Ministry of Education.
