‘Accomplices’ Detained in Covid-19 Quarantine Hotel Jailbreak Case

Authorities are closing “a little loophole” in Covid-19 quarantine procedures following the escape of two Chinese men from a hotel on Wednesday night, with officers on the chase and “accomplices” brought in for questioning.
The two Chinese nationals arrived in Phnom Penh on Tuesday around 11 a.m., according to the Health Ministry, matching the details of a China Eastern Airlines flight from Shanghai. The men, who tested negative for the virus, were to stay at a hotel for two nights to wait for the test results of all passengers on the flight, but fled the hotel after a night.
Phnom Penh governor Khuong Sreng said on Thursday that authorities were pursuing clues in the case.
“We’re using all means to find them,” Sreng said. “We have arrested their accomplices and we are working with them now to expose their whereabouts.”
Sreng said patrols around quarantine hotels would be tightened, calling the lapse in security “a little loophole.”
Police have remained mostly tight-lipped about the case, with municipal police spokesperson San Sokseyha saying only that the search was ongoing.

Chinese Covid-19 Quarantine Fugitives Still at Large After 2 Weeks

Phnom Penh’s police chief said on Wednesday that authorities have yet to track down two Chinese men who escaped from Covid-19 quarantine on September 9 despite authorities searching for two weeks.
The two men were quarantined at a Phnom Penh hotel on September 8 after arriving on a China Eastern Airlines flight from Shanghai. They were required to wait two nights for test results from all passengers on the flight, but fled after just one night.
“It isn’t that we’ve let them go free — that we are strict against Cambodians but lax when it comes to foreigners,” said Phnom Penh Municipal Police chief Sar Thet. “Once they escape, it is not easy for us to catch them.”
Five previous escapees — all Cambodian or Cambodian-American — were found and brought back to quarantine within days.
Thet said police had detained a Chinese man thought to be an accomplice in the escape, but the man did not provide any concrete information.
The Chinese national did not have a visa or even a passport, so police had started the process for his deportation to China, Thet said.

Re: Two Chinese Men on the Run After Escape From Cambodian Covid Quarantine
The two Chinese men who escaped from quarantine in Phnom Penh over a month ago have still not been found by the authorities.
12 October
Quarantine Escapees
There have been several cases of people escaping or flouting quarantine.
The first case was a 36-year-old Cambodian-American woman who arrived on July 15. After testing negative, she escaped from her room on July 18. Later that evening, the authorities found her in a guesthouse in Kampong Cham city.
The second case was of two men, aged 22 and 33, who had returned from Malaysia on July 23. The men fled from a health centre in Prey Veng province on August 3.
Later that night, the authorities found them in a house in Prey Veng province.
The third case was of a Vietnamese woman and her 13-year-old son, who escaped from a quarantine centre in Prey Veng province. They fled to Kampong Chhnang province where they were later found.
The fourth case was of two Chinese men who arrived in Cambodia on September 8, before leaving their quarantine centre in Phnom Penh.
The authorities are still looking for the duo.
Two other cases involved the now recovered Hungarian man and a COVID -19 positive Frenchman, 27, caught partying while he was supposed to be in quarantine in Siem Reap province.
