February 20, 2021, Covid Community Outbreak (Koh Pich and Beyond)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Police locked me in today, fun. The chineese had been here in the house. One of the mentioned condo buildings.

Not looking forward to 2 weeks here

That sucks. Good luck.

This is crazy!

Is everyone living on Koh Pich or in certain buildings now locked in for two weeks?? Or if you went into town for something now you’re locked out of your condo for two weeks with just the clothes on your back?

Unreal! Only in Cambodia!

If a senior government person was reading this, he would be forgiven for thinking we are a critical and irrational bunch of guys sometimes.

Some posters have speculated on what is or is not the truth and with a degree of scepticism of government statements.

Private investigators who are tasked with finding out things have a motto - start with what you know to be true and work from there.

What do we know is true? The government does not want the Chinese to be blamed for this outbreak. And the government announced that the infected persons are 19 from China, 1 from Taiwan and 1 from Vietnam. And that the infection emerged from 4 Chinese bribing their way out of quarantine.

Let's ask ourselves - would a government that wishes to falsify the facts release this data that so contradicts their desired narrative? Of course they would not, so that is a powerful argument that the government is in fact speaking the truth in their pronouncements.

Personally I don’t see anything implausible in what has been said. And if it is damning towards a particular nationality, we don't need to hammer that nail so hard, any rational being can draw the conclusions that need to be drawn without us over-egging the pudding.

We should present ourselves as a responsible and rational group who can be trusted to contribute in a helpful and constructive way as behoves our western values and what we believe is the way to behave as guests fortunate to be in this country.
I think you're on the wrong track. The main narrative in Cambodia isn't shifting the blame away from the Chinese, the main narrative is the virus has been banned from Cambodia because of timely and effective government actions and only once in a blue moon there's a flare up because of imported cases.

And guess what's the story now? 4 Chinese escaped from their quarantine (when? I've seen no timeline published) and they managed to infect other Chinese causing a flare up. They were accidentally discovered because they needed negative tests to return to China.

Calling clubbers:
February 20, 2021
Call for N8 Club attendees to come forward to curb the ‘February 20 Community Incident’
Sen David / Khmer Times

The Ministry of Health and Phnom Penh Municipality have called on everyone who entered N8 Club in the capital between February 4 and 19, as well as those who came into direct contact with the “February 20 Community Incident”, to undergo 14-day quarantine and go for a COVID-19 test at Chak Angre Health Centre.

Ministry of Health secretary of state Youk Sambath said that all citizens involved in the “February 20 Community Incident”, as well as those in connection with N8 Club, should hurry to get a health check and have their sample taken at Chak Angre Health Centre, followed by mandatory quarantine for 14 days.

“Do so in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the Phnom Penh community,” she said.

Earlier today, Prime Minister HE announced the third COVID-19 community outbreak, dubbing it the “February 20 Community Incident”.

He said the community infection has been traced to have begun in N8 Club, near the Olympic Stadium. He confirmed that in just over 10 hours, the Ministry of Health found large-scale transmission of COVID-19 in the community, with 32 cases, an unprecedented case in Cambodia.

What about the owners of the N8 club ... aren't clubs supposed to be closed still? Pretty certain the regular western clubs are also still running behind closed doors #Facebook news says.. Muppets the lot of them.

Night clubs, KTVs, and beer gardens in Phnom Penh are supposedly (officially) closed I think. Lol. Just like all the girly bars in St 130/Daun Penh district. (Reports say they are all still open for business, but I haven't been there to confirm. Anybody ? )
Casinos are open for sure, and elsewhere in Cambodia, bars and nightlife are open as usual AFAIK, western and Khmer.

I question the official government narrative, and I think the government claims too much of the success of retaining covid, but I also think the government has acted pretty realistically since about June 2020 by opening the borders again although with restrictions (test + quarantine + visa). This made it possible for people really wanting to enter to enter to get in. I give the government all credits for that. So it's not like I'm just trying to bash here.

<edit>
It's stuff like this:

There's just no need to spread stories like this.

Last night the bars in 130 were asked by the local sankat guys to turn off the flashing lights, but otherwise it was business as usual.
Quite what this hopes to achieve is anyone's guess.

(I was just passing the street on my way home from midnight mass  )
