This is Fucked:: USA goes back to One-China policy

Which is the most rational and pragmatic course to follow. Exactly what would the US achieve by supporting Taiwan and HK against Beijing? Like Chine would cave in and say, you know what, you are right, these islands deserve their own independence. Get real. All it would be is a long (very long) drawn out war of words, sanctions, trade restrictions, threats etc etc and in the end nothing changes. Suppose Hawaii or Alaska wanted independence, would the US be happy for China to support them? Diplomacy is always about accepting the lesser evil - it is still an evil, but the alternative is worse. And working behind the scenes, building relationships, looking for ways to assist human rights. To ask Biden to push against Beijing is just naivety and ignorance - knee jerk politics, waste of emotion and effort.
I don't necessarily disagree. I'm just reacting to the OP's misguided "shock" about Biden's alleged shift in policy!

What has China ever annexed? Don't say Tibet, that was only independent for a few years because the Han were too busy fighting among themselves. The sandbanks in the South China Sea? A sliver of northern Vietnam for a few weeks in 1979?

Yes that is the definition of power. It has always been so for thousands of years. Interesting that you exclude the USA from the list of powerful nations but you are right - the USA is in decline.

And we like to believe it is not the way.

Well there may be different opinions about Tibet. I also dont think that anybody would run to Taiwan's help if China decided to put their hands on it in the future.

Tibet was only independent for 36 years and has been under PRC control for the past 70. So other than a few border skirmishes in the Himalayas and a punitive incursion into Vietnam, along with troops in Korea, Laos and Vietnam supporting their wars, what exactly has it annexed? Where is this great tragedy?

I hate to restate common knowledge, but it's a little bit more than just sandbanks. It's a vast swath of resource-rich maritime territory that was previously controlled (legally) by various other countries, also home to important shipping routes.

We liked to think that the old ways of power had changed and we lived in a more civilized world. We were clearly wrong.

I'm not agreeing with their recent policies, just saying they haven't annexed anything much recently.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion on whether or not 3.5 million square kilometres is anything much.
