Two questions:

Are there 1 per side, for balance?

and did the B52 require major modification or was it designed to carry payload on the inner wing?

Great questions.

Looks like they did have 1 per side.

Inner wing pylons were part of the design. They can carry conventional bombs, cruise missiles, etc. there.

Though I think having just one side loaded was doable as you can see with the X-15, all they'd have to do is change the weight and balance of the fuel in the wings to compensate for the off balance configuration.

Chunky, Grumman XF10F Jaguar. Test pilot described it as entertaining to fly "because there was so much wrong with it." 1 built.
