Great questions.
Looks like they did have 1 per side.
Inner wing pylons were part of the design. They can carry conventional bombs, cruise missiles, etc. there.
Though I think having just one side loaded was doable as you can see with the X-15, all they'd have to do is change the weight and balance of the fuel in the wings to compensate for the off balance configuration.
