I remember a time when the internet was so innocent and despite its potential, nobody was looking to profit from it. Even Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, could have made a fortune if he'd patented his idea, but instead, he gave it away for free.
Wouldn't it have been such a proud human achievement if it had remained like that? Instead, big business, the profit inventive, greed and power have totally destroyed it. Watching the internet evolve was like reading George Orwell's Animal Farm, in that everything starts out on an equal footing, but inevitably, the dominant players start to rise to the top and before we know it, the whole thing is controlled by just a handful of players who have somehow manipulated the whole thing in a way that most of our lives are now owned by them.
The more money Australia (or any country good that matter) can suck out of Google and Facebook the better. Bleed them dry. I wouldn't shed any tears.

The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never allow the dumb ones to lead the pack.

That's because they are allowed to lay the foundations down very early on so that whatever happens, it will be others who suffer. They simply become too big to fail. Much like the banking industry.
I'm no commie socialist, far from it. But no private company should ever be allowed to dominate an industry in the way Facebook and Google do. Competition is vital in any capitalist system, it spurs innovation and creativity, but when a company such as Google is allowed to drown out the competition, the very opposite happens.
For example, there is a fairly new, privacy focused search engine called Qwant, but they knew from the start that they could never compete with the likes of Google, and investing so much money in creating their own algorithms was too big a risk. So they have no choice but to use Google search results, but with added security and privacy filters on top. And of course, they have to pay Google a premium to do this. Yet again, Google wins, whichever way you look at it, and it's dominance over the whole industry stifles creativity and innovation from smaller companies who simply can't get a foot in the door.
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never allow the dumb ones to lead the pack.

Let the media put up a paywall.
Those minions taking orders from big news may get a giant surprise if they persist.
They may even be held to account at the polls by businesses that advertise there.
The spectacular backdown by Scomo should be hilarious.

If Google made cars they would not be allowed into Australian paint factories to help themselves to free paint. So why should they help themselves to free news content, which are the products, the stock in trade, of Media company employees?
Force them to pay something. If the refuse and close the search function, so be it. There are other search engines out there and people will us them. And business' will stop paying Google for their high search engine ranking positions and other advertising, so there is that too.
Of course, CEO News should be free to purloin and plagiarise as much news content as it can gather in it's greedy little paws, gratis.

Google Search Alternatives
I never use Google as a Search Engine. I don't want to be profiled and my data sold for profits of which i will not get a part of.
There are alternatives out there:
